Are frail elderly patients treated in a CGA unit more satisfied with their hospital care than those treated in conventional acute medical care?
Our aim was to study whether the acute care of frail elderly patients directly admitted to a comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) unit is superior to the care in a conventional acute medical care unit in terms of patient satisfaction. ⋯ Acute care in a CGA unit with direct admission was associated with higher levels of patient satisfaction compared with conventional acute care via the emergency room.

The influence of quality of life on the level of adherence to therapeutic recommendations among elderly hypertensive patients.
Hypertension is one of the most important risk factors for cardiovascular disease, which contributes to lowering the quality of life (QOL), especially in elderly patients. Recent data show that almost half of the hypertensive patients and one-third of patients with comorbidities were nonadherent to medication. ⋯ There is an association between QOL and adherence to therapeutic recommendations among hypertensive elderly patients. It has been concluded that with an increasing QOL, the level of adherence to therapeutic recommendations increases. The level of adherence is also negatively affected by: older age, longer duration of disease, worse marital status, lower education, living alone, and using polytherapy.

A cohort study to evaluate infection prevention protocol in pediatric trauma patients with blunt splenic injury in a Dutch level 1 trauma center.
Asplenic patients are at increased risk for the development of overwhelming postsplenectomy infection (OPSI) syndrome. It is believed that adequate immunization, antimicrobial prophylaxis, as well as appropriate education concerning risks on severe infection lead to the decreased incidence of OPSI. The aim of this study was to analyze the methods used to prevent OPSI in trauma patients splenectomized before the age of 18. ⋯ The vaccination status, the level of knowledge concerning prevention of an OPSI, and the use of prophylactic antibiotics are suboptimal in pediatric patients treated for BSI. Therefore, we created a new follow-up treatment guideline to have adequate preventive coverage to current standards for these patients.

Patient engagement in type 2 diabetes mellitus research: what patients want.
As patients are the ultimate stakeholder in their health, their perspectives should be included along with researchers, providers, and funders of research design, execution, and interpretation. Despite the high prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), patients are rarely directly included in these decisions. ⋯ Patients with T2DM would like researchers to address outcomes that have meaning in patients' daily lives. Initiatives to involve patients in research should leverage and enable patients to contribute as participants, advisors, or co-investigators, going beyond research topic prioritization to full participation throughout the research process based on their abilities and interest. This study provides support for the use of online patient research network discussions to generate rich qualitative data to engage patients in research.
