ReviewInterventions Incorporating Therapeutic Alliance to Improve Medication Adherence in Black Patients with Diabetes, Hypertension and Kidney Disease: A Systematic Review.
Black Americans have a disproportionately increased risk of diabetes, hypertension, and kidney disease, and higher associated morbidity, mortality, and hospitalization rates than their White peers. Structural racism amplifies these disparities, and negatively impacts self-care including medication adherence, critical to chronic disease management. Systematic evidence of successful interventions to improve medication adherence in Black patients with diabetes, hypertension, and kidney disease is lacking. Knowledge of the impact of therapeutic alliance, ie, the unique relationship between patients and providers, which optimizes outcomes especially for minority populations, is unclear. The role and application of behavioral theories in successful development of medication adherence interventions specific to this context also remains unclear. ⋯ Study findings suggest that therapeutic alliance-based interventions are effective in improving medication adherence in Black patients with diabetes and hypertension. Further research to test the efficacy of therapeutic alliance-based interventions to improve medication adherence in Black patients should ideally incorporate cultural adaptation, theoretical framework, face-to-face delivery mode, and convenient locations.

ReviewExploring Validated Self-Reported Instruments to Assess Adherence to Medications Used: A Review Comparing Existing Instruments.
To provide an overview of instruments that measure adherence to medications to facilitate selection of an instrument and to provide a summary of some published adherence assessment tools tailored to be used by the healthcare team, especially the pharmacists. ⋯ Various instruments are used to assess patient adherence to medications; however, no single one performs well on all criteria. Every instrument has different advantages and unique properties. A particular instrument can be chosen after considering certain factors, such as the specific requirements, population, the needed time to complete the questionnaire, the sensitivity, and the specificity of the questionnaire. Moreover, there is a recognized need to provide primary care medication adherence services customized to patient's needs. A link for teamwork between healthcare providers such as pharmacists and patients is needed. This link can be a validated instrument to assess patient's adherence to medication.

ReviewAntipsychotic-Related Stigma and the Impact on Treatment Choices: A Systematic Review and Framework Synthesis.
Antipsychotics are a class of medications primarily used to treat individuals with psychotic disorders. They have also been indicated for patients with other psychiatric conditions, such as post-traumatic stress disorder and major depressive disorder. Non-adherence is prominent amongst individuals prescribed antipsychotics, with medication-related self-stigma and social stigma identified as major factors. No previous reviews have focused on stigma associated specifically with antipsychotic medication. This systematic literature review aimed to synthesise evidence on the prevalence of stigmatising attitudes and behaviours related to antipsychotic treatment and understand their impact on antipsychotic treatment initiation and continuation. ⋯ This systematic literature review found that antipsychotic-related social and self-stigma is a factor in non-adherence to antipsychotics. Further research should examine stigma in a wider range of patients and the extent to which clinicians' treatment decisions are impacted by the potential stigma associated with antipsychotic medications.

ReviewImproving Patient Adherence to Lifestyle Changes for the Management of Gastroesophageal Reflux.
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a common gastrointestinal illness with symptoms of heartburn, chest pain, and regurgitation. Management of GERD can involve medication use, lifestyle modification (eg, dietary modification), and surgical intervention depending on the individual patient and disease severity. Poor adherence to medication and recommended lifestyle changes may result in increased symptom severity and decreased quality of life. ⋯ The review also demonstrated a lack of clear and standardized guidelines across lifestyle modifications, which may have an influence on adherence and adherence reporting. Future research in GERD treatment adherence would benefit from the use of validated measures to assess adherence. Specific recommendations to improving patient adherence are discussed.

ReviewDynamics of Patient-Based Benefit-Risk Assessment of Medicines in Chronic Diseases: A Systematic Review.
A critical gap exits in understanding the dynamics of patient-based benefit-risk assessment (BRA) of medicines in chronic diseases during the disease journey. ⋯ Factors important for patients' BRA of their medicines during a chronic disease journey vary more with their clinical situation and previous treatment experience than with time since diagnosis. Due to the importance of these factors on patients' perspectives and potential impact on their decision-making and eventually their clinical outcomes, there is a need for more studies to assess the dynamics of patients' BRA in every disease.
