Health-Related Quality of Life in Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease in Hemodialysis in Medellín (Colombia).
Hemodialysis is a treatment that is essential for the survival of patients with terminal chronic kidney disease. However, it is highly invasive, non-curative, and physically, psychologically, socially, and financially demanding, which has an impact on the patient's health-related quality of life (HRQL). In Colombia, research from the point of view of patients undergoing hemodialysis is scarce. ⋯ The result of this study revealed the impact on the quality of life of Colombian patients undergoing hemodialysis with chronic kidney disease who were highly affected by the disease burden. KDQOL-36 has excellent properties of reliability, internal consistency, and discriminant power; thus, its use is recommended in subsequent studies to monitor HRQL in this population.

Does patient health literacy impact adherence to adjuvant endocrine therapy in breast cancer patients?
Functional health literacy is critical for patients' functional understanding and management of disease including adherence to medications and treatment recommendations. The purpose of this study was to determine if there is a relationship between self-reported health literacy and 1) decision to take adjuvant endocrine therapy and 2) adherence to adjuvant endocrine therapy at 2 years among women with breast cancer. ⋯ Despite the underpinnings regarding health literacy and medication adherence supporting our hypothesis, we did not find an association between health literacy and the decision to initiate therapy or continued adherence at 2 years following diagnosis. Further study is needed to determine the nuances in adherence to adjuvant endocrine therapy for women with breast cancer.

Mechanisms for improving diabetes patient-provider communication through optimal use of e-clinical technologies.
Purpose: Effective health care and patient adherence to their prescribed regimens relies on successful communication between patients and their providers. This study examined mechanisms for optimizing patient-physician communication in subjects with type 2 diabetes, with a focus on optimizing the incorporation of e-clinical technology to improve engagement and communication. Methods: A total of 105 subjects with type 2 diabetes participating in a large US mode equivalency study were surveyed independently of this trial. ⋯ The majority of subjects were interested in using technology to help manage their type 2 diabetes, including 62% favoring communicating with their health-care providers via email and a considerable fraction interested in using smartphones to be provided medication reminders (56%), clinical visit scheduling (55%), and text messaging (49%). Conclusion: Subjects are interested in using electronic methods to increase communication with their physicians and manage their type 2 diabetes. Health-care providers should consider engaging patients with e-clinical technology to increase patient-physician communication and for the ultimate goal of improved health care.

A pragmatic behavior-based habit index for adherence to nebulized treatments among adults with cystic fibrosis.
Habit, a psychological process that automatically generates urges to perform a behavior in associated settings, is potentially an important determinant of medication adherence. Habit is challenging to measure because, as a psychological construct, it cannot be directly observed. We describe a method of using routinely available objective adherence data from electronic data capture (EDC) to generate a behavior-based index of adherence habit and demonstrate how this index can be applied. ⋯ We have described a pragmatic method to infer "habit" from adherence data routinely captured with EDC and provided proof-of-principle evidence regarding the feasibility of this concept. The continuous stream of data from EDC allows the habit index to unobtrusively assess "habit" at various time points over prolonged periods, and hence the habit index may be applicable in habit formation studies.

Factors influencing completion of treatment among pulmonary tuberculosis patients.
Objective: This study aimed to understand the influencing factors of treatment completion among pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) patients in Anhui province, eastern People's Republic of China, in order to provide scientific evidence for improving the follow-up rate and treatment completion rate. Methods: A total of 262 PTB patients in six counties (districts) of Anhui province were investigated by questionnaire, and data about treatment interruption were collected. Results: The main causes of treatment interruption were forgetting to take medicine (24.5%), drug side effects (23.3%), and symptomatic improvement (19.5%). ⋯ The patients interrupted by drug side effects had the highest risk of interruption. In terms of the tracking method, the completion rate of patients tracked by the rural medical staff was significantly lower. Conclusions: The management of PTB patients by medication supervision should be strengthened, especially for those with low education level and who had drug side effects, in order to improve their treatment completion rate.
