ReviewHow to meet patients' individual needs for drug information - a scoping review.
The aim of this study was to 1) describe drug information desired by patients and 2) analyze how such information could be customized to be presented to patients according to their individual information needs. ⋯ Patients particularly request information on ADRs and DDIs. Approaches to customize such information are sparse. The identified information domains of each topic could be used to structure corresponding drug information and to thus facilitate customization to individual information needs.

ReviewBarriers to treatment: describing them from a different perspective.
Poor adherence is the result of many barriers. Most of the adherence research has focused on the patients' hurdles to adherence, instead of the responsibility the physician has for assuring adherence to treatment. ⋯ This review provides clear evidence that adherence to medication is affected by multiple barriers. To facilitate this, adherence barriers can be framed as physician/health system hurdles. With that focus in mind, we may put the responsibility where we have the most control.

ReviewSelf-efficacy for medication management: a systematic review of instruments.
Medication self-efficacy is a potentially important construct in research around optimal use of prescription medications. A number of medication self-efficacy measures are available; however, there is no systematic review of existing instruments and cataloguing of their theoretical underpinnings or psychometric properties, strengths, and weaknesses. The aim of the study was to identify instruments that measure self-efficacy for medication management. The study also aimed to examine the quality, theoretical grounding, and psychometric evaluation of existing measures of self-efficacy for medication management. The study was a systematic review. ⋯ Although our analysis would recommend the use of the Self-Efficacy for Appropriate Medication Use Scale because of the current evidence of validity and reliability, more psychometric evaluation is required, particularly in terms of responsiveness to change as self-efficacy is a malleable patient-level factor. Three measures of self-efficacy for medication management were identified. Overall, some evidence of reliability and/or validity was demonstrated for all instruments; however, other forms of validity were not tested (ie, responsiveness to change). Use of a well-validated measure of self-efficacy medication management is essential in order to understand relationships between medication self-efficacy and other patient-reported outcomes such as patient-centeredness, patient enablement, and burden of treatment, an important area of research that is currently lacking.

Self-reported adherence and biomarker levels of CoQ10 and alpha-tocopherol.
Women with breast cancer were randomized to receive coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) plus Vitamin E or placebo in a clinical trial. The objective of this evaluation is to examine the association between participant self-reported adherence to the study supplements and changes in plasma biomarker levels. ⋯ These findings support that self-reported adherence is likely to be overestimated. Biological and other measures of adherence that can better identify true adherence to study pills provided in clinical trials are greatly needed as they may assist in improving the interpretation of findings of future clinical trials.

A multivariate investigation into the relationship between pharmaceutical characteristics and patient preferences of bioequivalent ibuprofen tablets.
In Spain the price of all ibuprofen 600 mg tablet generic products is the same due to reimbursement existing rules so for the patient there is not any economic incentive to choose a particular one. Bearing in mind that the quality of generic products should be similar, it could be questioned if differences in patient preferences evaluated as sales could be related to differences on their pharmaceutical properties. The aims of this work were to study the variability on the pharmaceutical characteristics of marketed bioequivalent tablet formulations and its impact on patient preferences. ⋯ The faster the tablet disintegration, the higher its sales. Two possible explanations are suggested: 1) the most specialized ibuprofen tablet manufacturer considers fast disintegration as a key parameter and/or 2) habitual consumers of ibuprofen can detect small differences on the onset of action among different marketed formulations. In this work, all marketed ibuprofen tablets comply with the pharmacopoeia specifications.
