Trajectory of thirst intensity and distress from admission to 4-weeks follow up at home in patients with heart failure.
Patients with heart failure (HF) can suffer from increased thirst intensity and distress. Trajectories of thirst intensity and distress from hospital to home are unclear. The aim of this study was to describe thirst intensity and distress trajectories in patients from the time of hospital admission to 4 weeks after discharge, and describe trajectories of thirst intensity and distress by patients' characteristics (gender, age, body mass index [BMI], plasma urea, anxiety, and depression). ⋯ Intensity and distress of thirst, having fluid restriction, and feeling depressed at the admission were critical in predicting the trajectory of thirst intensity and distress after discharge to home in patients with HF. Effective intervention relieving thirst should be provided before their discharge to home.

Substance use preferences and sexually transmitted infections among Canadian post-secondary students.
In Canada, substance use is one of the key predisposing factors that may lead to risky sexual behaviors among post-secondary students. There is considerable economic burden and significant public health concern posed by substance use and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). The purpose of this study was to examine the prevalence of substance use preferences (alcohol, cannabis, and other drugs) and its association with STIs among Canadian post-secondary students. ⋯ In this study, significant associations were found between cannabis and other drug use and STIs among post-secondary students in Canada. The results of this study can help inform institutions of higher learning and public health professionals in the design, implementation, and evaluation of substance use and STI policies and effective school-based health programming.

The association of therapeutic versus recreational marijuana use and antiretroviral adherence among adults living with HIV in Florida.
Marijuana use is common among people living with HIV (PLWH), but its association with antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence is unclear. This study examined the association between reason for marijuana use and ART adherence in a sample of adults living with HIV. ⋯ Our results suggest differences in ART adherence between individuals who report recreational versus therapeutic marijuana use. Continued research examining the health implications of marijuana use among adults living with HIV is important as legalization of recreational and medical marijuana proliferates in the United States.

A qualitative exploration of barriers to medication adherence among patients with uncontrolled diabetes in Qatar: integrating perspectives of patients and health care providers.
To develop an in-depth understanding of the barriers to medication adherence among patients with uncontrolled diabetes attending primary health care (PHC) centers in Qatar by exploring and integrating patients' and health care providers' perspectives. ⋯ Patients with uncontrolled diabetes face multiple barriers to medication adherence. Similar themes emerged from both patients and their care providers. This research highlights the need for concerted multidimensional efforts and series of interventions to overcome these barriers. One vital intervention is expanding the scope of pharmacists' role within the PHC centers through providing medication reconciliation, patient-tailored medication counseling, and medicines use review, which may improve treatment outcomes among patients with diabetes.

A patient-reported, non-interventional, cross-sectional discrete choice experiment to determine treatment attribute preferences in treatment-naïve overactive bladder patients in the US.
Many pharmacotherapeutic treatment options are available for the symptoms of overactive bladder (OAB), each offering varying efficacy, safety, and tolerability profiles that must be carefully considered when selecting treatment. The objective of the present study was to characterize pharmacotherapy treatment preferences of individuals with symptoms of OAB and to examine how preferences differ by both patient characteristics and disease burden metrics. ⋯ OAB treatment preferences vary depending on individual patient characteristics and disease severity. Overall, drug delivery method, reduced daytime micturition, and out-of-pocket costs were the most important treatment attributes among treatment-naïve individuals with symptoms of OAB. Preferences for OAB treatment were also found to vary depending on patient demographics and disease comorbidities, which has previously not been examined.
