Factors associated with acceptance of provider-initiated HIV testing and counseling among pregnant women in Ethiopia.
The global human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) epidemic disproportionately affects sub-Saharan African countries, including Ethiopia. Provider-initiated HIV testing and counseling (PITC) is a tool to identify HIV-positive pregnant women and an effective treatment and prevention strategy. However, its success depends upon the willingness of pregnant women to accept HIV testing. ⋯ About one-third of pregnant women are not willing to accept PITC. When designing intervention program to improve the acceptance of PITC, we should take into consideration the personal factors, HIV-related knowledge, and attitude of women as well as institutional factors.

A 4-year non-randomized comparative phase-IV study of early rheumatoid arthritis: integrative anthroposophic medicine for patients with preference against DMARDs versus conventional therapy including DMARDs for patients without preference.
While disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) are a mainstay of therapy for rheumatoid arthritis (RA), some patients with early RA refuse DMARDs. In anthroposophic medicine (AM), a treatment strategy for early RA without DMARDs has been developed. Preliminary data suggest that RA symptoms and inflammatory markers can be reduced under AM, without DMARDs. ⋯ Because of the non-randomized study design, with A-patients choosing anthroposophic treatment, one cannot infer how this treatment would have worked for C-patients.

Psychometric properties of the Arabic version of the EUROPEP questionnaire.
The evaluation of quality of primary health care from the perspective of refugees is very underdeveloped. It depends mainly on the availability of instruments in the language of the refugees. The aim of this study was to translate, culturally adapt, and examine the psychometric properties especially the internal consistency and convergent construct validity of the Arabic version of the European Project on Patient Evaluation of General Practice Care (EUROPEP) questionnaire. ⋯ The Arabic version of the EUROPEP questionnaire shows appropriate internal consistency and convergent construct validity. The availability of this instrument in Arabic language encourages further research in the field of outcome quality from refugees' perspective in other health service research projects.

Medication adherence in chronic illness: do beliefs about medications play a role?
Several medicines are prescribed for chronic disease management; however, adherence to long-term therapy remains poor. Culture influences beliefs about medications and, ultimately, adherence to treatment. There is a paucity of data with regard to beliefs about medications in the Middle East region, and it remains to be determined how these beliefs would impact treatment adherence. ⋯ Medication adherence is a complex, multifaceted issue and patient beliefs about medications contribute significantly, although partially, to adherence among a multicultural Middle Eastern patient population.

Real-life experience of quality of life, treatment satisfaction, and adherence in patients receiving oral anticoagulants for atrial fibrillation.
Direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) have shown noninferiority to vitamin K antagonists (VKA) in stroke prevention in patients with atrial fibrillation. DOAC treatment may be less demanding than VKA, improving quality of life. To date, there have been no studies of the real-life experience of outpatients receiving anticoagulation therapy for atrial fibrillation in France. ⋯ The experience of patients under oral anticoagulation therapy for atrial fibrillation managed on an outpatient basis was good, with comparable quality of life under DOACs and VKA, and significantly greater satisfaction under DOACs, without impact on adherence. Taking account of patient preference in "shared decision-making" for the choice of type of anticoagulant could improve the patients' experience of treatment.
