To assess the effect of high-frequency ventilation (HFV) in children and adolescents with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) through estimates of survival rate and time of ventilation. To verify whether HFV can reduce the indication for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) in children and adolescents with ARDS. ⋯ It was not possible to determine if use of HFV improves the survival rate of children and adolescent with ARDS. Regarding ventilation time, there is no study that confirms, with statistical significance, its increase or decrease. Whether HFV reduces indication of ECMO for children and adolescents with ARDS or not was also determined.

Randomized Controlled Trial
[Effect of propofol in combination with ephedrine upon the onset time of cisatracurium].
The onset time of neuromuscular blocking drugs is partially determined by circulatory factors, including muscle blood flow and cardiac output. The aim of the present paper was to: 1) compare the haemodynamic effects of adding different doses of ephedrine to an induction dose of propofol and remifentanil. 2) onset time of cisatracurium. ⋯ There were no clinically important decreases in the hemodynamic parameters evaluated in the groups receiving ephedrine or not, and the onset time of cisatracurium was the same for all groups.

Early tracheal extubation following surgical procedures favors clinical evolution of patients and reduces incidence and time of stay in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), minimizing hospital costs. Immediate postoperative period of pulmonary resections often takes place in the ICU and patients are kept intubated. This study evaluated hospital records of patients submitted to thoracotomy and a correlation between extubation time, postoperative evolution and ICU stay was established. ⋯ Safe immediate tracheal extubation of patients submitted to pulmonary resection surgery is possible. This kind of management favors postoperative recuperation out of ICU, which results in patients and hospital benefits, mainly referred to costs.

Preoperative glucocorticoid administration has been proposed to reduce postoperative morbidity. This is not frequently done before esophageal resection because of insufficient knowledge on its effectiveness. The purpose was to assess the effects of preoperative glucocorticoid administration in adults undergoing esophageal resection for esophageal carcinoma. ⋯ Prophylactic administration of glucocorticoids is associated with decreased postoperative complications.

[Analysis of the intracuff pressures of intensive care patients].
The intracuff pressure, when maladjusted, may cause complications. It is therefore important to measure it precisely and according to a routine. The objective of this study was to compare the intracuff pressures in the morning, afternoon and night shifts, and to measure pressures of the endotracheal tube (TOT) and the tracheotomy tube, comparing the results obtained and relating it with patients gender. ⋯ A routine of measuring intracuff pressures during the morning and night shifts should be established. Furthermore, a higher intracuff pressure in the tube was observed in patients who underwent tracheotomy, showing the importance of redoubling the care of these patients.
