To identify the pediatric ICUs at Rio de Janeiro, number of beds, geographical distribution, public or private nature, type of hospital and assistance, studying population demand and to propose measures for improving equity. ⋯ There is no equity in the distribution and accessibility to the available beds, with lack in public and excess in private sectors, a great concentration in the metropolitan area and only 5% of ICUs at university hospitals, recommending a policy of redistribution and allocation of new beds in more needy areas, associated with the creation of an admission center along with an efficient reference and transportation system.

To validate a previous prognostic index (Pereira et al.) to postoperative pulmonary complication in elective upper abdominal surgery, and observe the risk factor for mortality in this population. ⋯ The index based on Pereira equation is valid to estimate the prognosis of postoperative pulmonary complication after elective upper abdominal surgery. Age higher 56 years old, duration of surgery more than 210 minutes and pneumopathy are important markers of postoperative pulmonary complication. The only significant marker for mortality was the post operative pulmonary complication.

Evaluate the frequency of depression in women with endometriosis and actual symptom of pelvic pain to determine the necessity of psychological support. ⋯ The results showed a high prevalence of depression symptoms in these patients confirming the necessity of psychological support.

In the last years doctors have been the target of a growing number of civil, criminal law suits, as well as ethical procedures. Medicine is a widely targeted career, not only owing to its inherent risks, but also owing to a mistaken approach of the Judiciary Power about the obligations of medical doctors. Decisions of the Medical Board in ethical procedures have an impact in civil and criminal justice and therefore should be followed closely. ⋯ Good medical practice and a good medical-patient relationship are still the best ways to minimize lawsuits and their repercussions. Doctors should have some knowledge of juridical mechanisms in lawsuits and ethical procedures, but should not take defense initiatives without prior consultation of an attorney.
