Syme amputation has been shown to have value in patients with diabetic foot infections, but it has inherent drawbacks. A potential alternative is the modified Pirogoff amputation. Our objective was to evaluate the outcome of modified Pirogoff amputation using internal fixation with 6.5-mm cannulated screws in the management of diabetic foot. ⋯ Our prospective study showed that with careful selection of patients, good postoperative results can be obtained. There is a definite role for modified Pirogoff amputation in the management of diabetic foot problems.

Efficacy and safety of denosumab compared to bisphosphonates in improving bone strength in postmenopausal osteoporosis: a systematic review.
Osteoporosis is the main cause of fractures among women after menopause. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of denosumab compared to bisphosphonates in treating postmenopausal osteoporosis. ⋯ Denosumab can be used both as a first-line agent and an alternative to bisphosphonate in the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis. There is currently insufficient data to show that denosumab is not inferior to bisphosphonates in fracture prevention.

Bicycles injuries are the leading cause of emergency department visits among all recreational activities and have been established as a significant worldwide public health burden. The purpose of this retrospective study was to describe the epidemiology and patterns of paediatric bicycle-related injuries in Singapore. ⋯ Our study demonstrated an increasing number of bicycle injuries among paediatric cyclists in the local setting. Parents, teachers, coaches and other caregivers should be educated regarding the need to use protective equipment and to seek medical care promptly in the case of trauma resulting from bicycle injuries.
