The present study was designed to investigate whether cinnamon bark extract (CBEt) mitigates the adverse effects of fructose loading on glucose metabolism and lipid profile in rats. ⋯ These findings indicate the improvement of glucose metabolism in-vivo by CBEt in fructose-fed rats.

The successful removal of impacted denture in the oesophagus in a patient is reported, with a review of the literature. A 36-year-old Malay man complained of dysphagia after swallowing his denture. ⋯ Oesophageal foreign bodies are usually removed by endoscopy. However, in situations where this appears potentially hazardous, such as with impacted denture, open surgical extraction that is promptly performed is a safe option.

Portal venous gas is a well-established radiological finding in neonates. With the advancement in diagnostic imaging, more cases are being reported in adults. We present a 55-year-old man with radiological findings of both portal venous gas and pneumatosis intestinalis secondary to ischaemic necrotising enterocolitis, with subsequent fatality. The significance of finding portal venous gas and its possible aetiology is discussed.

Children with Down syndrome (DS) are prone to develop obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) for a combination of reasons, including small upper airway, midfacial hypoplasia, micrognathia and muscular hypotonia. The objective of this study was to compare the prevalence of OSA in DS children, with or without snoring, with snoring children matched for gender, age and weight for height. ⋯ 59 percent of DS children in the current series were found to have OSA and they were more likely to develop OSA than controls. Nearly 40 percent of DS children with OSA did not have habitual snoring.

Fluoroquinolones (FQs), frequently used for many common infections such as community-acquired pneumonia and urinary tract infection, are also effective against Mycobacterium tuberculosis. This study describes a series of patients in whom the empirical use of FQs for what appeared to be common community-acquired infections led to a delay in the diagnosis of tuberculosis (TB). ⋯ FQs may lead to partial symptom resolution in TB. We highlight the problem of a delayed diagnosis, and voice our concern about inadvertent monotherapy of TB in such cases.
