Retinoblastomas of the eye are a cause of childhood blindness and have a high rate of mortality, as well as a hereditary mode of transmission. Other conditions that mimic retinoblastomas are known as pseudoretinoblastomas, and are managed differently. Although pseudoretinoblastoma and the accuracy of retinoblastoma diagnosis have been reviewed in Caucasian patients, published studies in Asian patients are lacking. The purpose of this article is to report our experience with pseudoretinoblastomas in two major ophthalmological centres in Asia. ⋯ Although our sample size is small, the percentage of confirmed retinoblastomas was found to be only slightly higher than that found in western countries. Our findings are consistent with their findings that Coat's disease and presumed ocular toxocariasis are the more common causes of pseudoretinoblastoma.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study Comparative Study
Efficacy and tolerability of celecoxib compared with diclofenac slow release in the treatment of acute ankle sprain in an Asian population.
Cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 selective inhibitors are attractive candidates for treatment of ankle sprain because of their efficacy as anti-inflammatory and analgesic agents and their overall safety, including lack of effect on platelet aggregation. The objective of this study was to assess the efficacy and tolerability of celecoxib compared with diclofenac slow release (SR) in the treatment of acute ankle sprain in an Asian population. ⋯ Celecoxib, a COX-2 selective inhibitor, is as effective as diclofenac SR in treating ankle sprains. With its platelet-sparing properties, celecoxib may offer an advantage over diclofenac SR in managing musculoskeletal injuries.

To describe the risk factors, causes and outcome of infant injuries so as to guide the formulation of injury prevention strategies specific for Singapore babies less than one year old. ⋯ Parents and caregivers of infants should be taught and reminded about the age specific measures in injury prevention as their wards go through the various developmental stages in the first year of life. Emphasis should be placed on close caregiver supervision, identifying potential injury hazards in the home, fall prevention, adopting safe infant care practices and the safe use of infant care products.

Spontaneous preterm labour and delivery accounts for approximately one-third of preterm births, which is the predominant cause of perinatal mortality and morbidity. This review aims to evaluate the evidence on the benefits and harms of five classes of tocolytic therapy, namely: betamimetics, calcium channel blockers, magnesium, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents, and atosiban. We performed a systematic review of the effectiveness of tocolytics to stop uterine contractions (first-line therapy). ⋯ However, the time gained in-utero need to be optimised. There is no clear first-line tocolytic agent. The use of tocolytic agents should be individualised and based on maternal condition, potential side-effects and gestational age.

To describe the relationship between bicycle helmet use and injury pattern sustained by patients presenting to an emergency department (ED) in Singapore for bicycle-related trauma. ⋯ Bicycle helmet use was low in our sample of injured patients. When worn, protection against injury was demonstrated. A campaign to promote use of bicycle helmets should be targeted at non-residents and older bicyclists. Authorities should consider compulsory helmet laws for bicyclists and expanding anti-drunk driving campaigns to target alcohol-intoxicated bicyclists.
