Lead can cause morphological and functional changes in heart, and inflammation and endothelial dysfunction in vasculature. Endocan, as a novel indicator of endothelial dysfunction, has been used for cardiovascular diseases. This study investigated the relationship between lead exposure, endocan levels, and diastolic functions. ⋯ Worsened diastolic functions may be seen in the course of lead exposure. Due to sharing a similar mechanism, a higher serum level of endocan may be a valuable laboratory clue for impaired diastolic function in this population.

In this study, our aim was to investigate the neutrophil/lymphocyte (N/L) ratio, variations in leukocytes and leukocyte subtypes, and the relationship between N/L ratio and insulin resistance (IR) in obesity. ⋯ In our study, leukocyte numbers and subtypes were determined to be higher among obese individuals than among healthy individuals. The N/L ratio was increased significantly only among obese patients with IR. Further studies are needed in order to better demonstrate the relationship between the N/L ratio and IR/inflammation.

Prolonged hypercalcemia impairs renal function, and a reduced glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is typical in advanced primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT). There are scarce data related to predictors of renal impairment in patients with PHPT. Hence, we aimed to evaluate changes in kidney function in PHPT patients after parathyroidectomy (PTX) and identify factors associated with GFR variation in these patients. ⋯ Olderage, higher preoperative calcium, and GFR were factors associated with GFR increase in PHPT patients after parathyroidectomy. Further renal impairment was prevented by parathyroidectomy in PHPT patients

Evaluation of myocardial dispersion of repolarization in patients with heart transplantation
The number of patients with heart transplantation has dramatically increased in the last decade. Considerable studies have suggested that the interval from the peak to the end of the electrocardiographic T wave (Tp-e) may correspond to the transmural dispersion of repolarization and increased Tp-e interval and Tp-e/QT ratio are associated with malignant ventricular arrhythmias. We analyzed the dispersion of myocardial repolarization using electrocardiographic Tp-e interval and Tp-e/QTc ratio in patients with heart transplantation. ⋯ Patients with heart transplantation have increased myocardial dispersion of repolarization.

Does chest compression during cardiopulmonary resuscitation provide sufficient cerebral oxygenation?
Some of the patients suffering from cardiac arrest (CA) remain in a chronic unconscious state in intensive care units (ICUs). The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of chest compression (CC) on cerebral oxygenation during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). As a secondary goal, we attempted to determine the effects of regional cerebral oxygen saturation (rSO2) values on consciousness and the survival rate using the Full Outline of Unresponsiveness (FOUR) scoring method. ⋯ Our results suggest that the maximum rSO2 values affect ROSC while the minimum and mean rSO2 values affect the post-cardiac arrest neurological outcome.
