GDF15, hepcidin and mitoferrin-1 (mfrn-1) are proteins involved in systemic iron regulation. There are no studies in the literature demonstrating the serum mfrn-1 levels in polycythemia vera (PV) and essential thrombocythemia (ET) patients. The aim of this study was to investigate GDF15, hepcidin and mfrn-1 levels in PV and ET patients. ⋯ Increased erythropoiesis in MPNs may lead to high GDF15 levels in these patients. However, hepcidin was not suppressed despite the increased GDF15 levels and erythropoiesis in these patients. Decrease in mfrn-1 in MPNs can be the result of its increased turnover due to increased myelopoiesis. It can be hypothesized that similar hepcidin levels in patients and controls and low mfrn-1 levels in patients may be a defense mechanism against erythroid activity and thromboembolic complications.

Thiol-specific antioxidant (TSA) protein is one of the most promising molecules among candidates for vaccine against cutaneous leishmaniasis. It was found to be significantly protective against different Leishmania species. In this study, cloning and molecular characterization of thiol-specific antioxidant gene of L. tropica Turkey isolate (LtTSA) were aimed. ⋯ LtTSA and its encoded TSA protein were found to be highly immunogenic and similar to TSA proteins previously tested as a vaccine candidate.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the nutritional status of children with cerebral palsy and determine the particular characteristics of the disorder. ⋯ Our results revealed a high rate of malnutrition and epilepsy in children with cerebral palsy. These two more common significant comorbidities that influence the outcomes of children with cerebral palsy should be carefully evaluated and successfully managed. Families of children with cerebral palsy and their physicians should be educated about the nutritional status in these children.

Ankaferd hemostat (ABS; Ankaferd blood stopper, İstanbul, Turkey) is a folkloric medicinal plant extract. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of Ankaferd hemostat (ABS) on the fate of Helicobacter pylori strains. The study also aims to determine alterations in the antimicrobial resistance of three different H. pylori strains in response to ABS exposure. ⋯ Our present study indicated, for the first time, that ABS could act against H. pylori. ABS is clinically used for the management of GI bleeding due to benign and malignant GI lesions. Thus, the possible anti-H. pylori effect of ABS shall expand the therapeutic spectrum of the drug in GI lesions in relation to H. pylori infection such as peptic ulser disease (PUD) and lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphomagenesis.

In immunosuppressed patients, strongyloidiasis can be lifethreatening because of hyperinfection or dissemination. Therefore, diagnosis of S. stercoralis is important in immunosuppressed patients with chronic strongyloidiasis. In this study, our objective was to investigate the presence of S. stercoralis antibodies by an ELISA method in immunosuppressed patients. ⋯ Strongyloidiasis can be a lifelong chronic infection if not treated. In patients who are going to receive immunosuppressive therapy, it should be tested before treatment, as it can become a disseminated and life-threatening infectious disease.
