This study aimed to evaluate the effect of sono-scintigraphic correlation on the success of minimal invasive parathyroidectomy (MIP) via surgeon performed continuous intraoperative sonographic guidance in patients operated for primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) without intact parathormone (PTH) measurement. ⋯ Sono-scintigraphic concordance with intraoperative real-time imaging increases surgical success rates in cases where MIP is planned under the circumstances of limited resources regarding unavailability of intact PTH measurement.

There are no extensive studies on the QL in children who completed acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) treatment and currently living without any disease in Turkey. Our study aimed to analyze both the QL and the effects of physical, neurocognitive capacities on QL in childhood ALL survivors aged 7–12 years at the time of recruitment. ⋯ The months after the treatment (off-treatment time) have not affected total and subunit QL scores. As motor skills difficulties will lead to low academic achievement, early recognition direct the parents for immediate intervention. lead to low academic achievement, early recognition could direct the parents for immediate intervention. Planning psychosocial support programs for physical activity and age-appropriate development of patients from the initiation of treatment will increase the QL in childhood ALL with a survival rate of 80% or more.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) mainly encompass two entities called ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD), both of which are chronic, progressive and, inflammatory conditions of the gastrointestinal tract. Various indicators and non-invasive markers have been sought and used in IBD patients to help assessing disease activity and treatment effectiveness although none of them are proven to yield definite results in full correlation with the clinical, endoscopic, and histopathological examinations. The aim of the current study was to investigate the relationship of serum neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL), asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA), and symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA) levels with disease type and activity and to assess their potential use in establishing diagnosis and activity status of IBD, namely UC and CD. ⋯ Serum NGAL, ADMA and SMDA levels are increased in patients with IBD, and serum NGAL, ADMA and SMDA concentrations are significantly higher in active IBD patients than inactive IBD patients. Our results suggest these biomarkers may serve in estimating IBD activity and severity.

A member of the adipokine family, omentin-1 is selectively secreted from visceral fat tissue and the omentum. It has been shown that omentin-1 is involved in the pathogenesis of certain diseases and can be used as a prognostic marker. This study first investigated the prognostic significance of omentin-1 in surgical intensive care patients. In addition, the relationship between omentin-1 and laboratory and clinical parameters commonly used in intensive care units (ICUs) was evaluated. ⋯ Omentin-1 may play a role in the complex constructs of inflammation and metabolic events in intensive care patients. Reduced omentin-1 levels in surgical intensive care patients were associated with poor prognosis and increased mortality.

Biochemical markers are needed to show lung involvement in COVID-19 disease. Galectin-3 is known to play a key role in the inflammation and fibrosis process. We aimed to evaluate the predictive role of galectin-3 levels for pneumonia in patients with COVID-19. ⋯ Galectin-3 was found as a diagnostic tool for COVID-19 associated typical pneumonia and as an indicator of both pneumonia and its severity.
