Neonatal brain injury is a significant reason of neurodevelopmental abnormalities and long-term neurological impairments. Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy and preterm brain injury, including intraventricular hemorrhage are the most common grounds of brain injury for full-term and preterm neonates. The prevalence of hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy varies globally, ranging from 1 to 3.5/1000 live births in high-resource countries and 26/1000 in low-resource countries. ⋯ Neonates generally have biochemical iron inequalities, and their antioxidant potential is highly restricted, implying that ferroptosis may be significant in pathologic conditions. Moreover, inhaled nitric oxide therapy in infants may lead to microglial inflammation via ferroptosis and neuronal injury in the developing brain. This review article aims to summarize the studies that investigated the association between neonatal brain injury and iron metabolism, with a particular emphasis on the microglial activity and its application to the inhibition of neonatal brain injury.

The purpose of this study is to determine the accuracy of bilateral inferior petrosal sinus sampling (IPSS) in lateralization and to investigate variables associated with accurate IPSS lateralization prediction. ⋯ IPSS is a valuable procedure in detecting tumor lateralization, especially in patients with Cushing's disease who have negative pituitary MRI results. However, since lateralization has a limited reliability, the pituitary gland should be comprehensively evaluated by taking into account the MRI findings (if positive) as well as data on the side of IPSS lateralization.

Studies regarding effectiveness of anakinra and tocilizumab treatments in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) have contradictory results. Furthermore, there is scarce comparative data regarding superiority of any agent. To further elucidate any superiority between these two agents, we retrospectively investigated and compared outcomes in hospitalized COVID-19 patients of our inpatient cohort who received anakinra or tocilizumab. ⋯ Anakinra administration in severe COVID-19 patients was significantly associated with better survival and greater clinical improvement compared to the tocilizumab administration in our study. Increased rate of glucocorticoid use in the anakinra group might have contributed to better outcomes.

Identification of sepsis-associated encephalopathy risk factors in elderly patients: a retrospective observational cohort study.
Sepsis-associated encephalopathy (SAE) is a severe complication of sepsis that affects upwards of half of all sepsis patients. Few studies have examined the etiology and risk factors of SAE among elderly patients. This study was designed to explore the epidemiology of SAE and the risk factors associated with its development in elderly populations. ⋯ Among elderly sepsis patients, SAE risk increases with advancing age, higher blood sodium concentrations, and without underlying COPD. SAE incidence is associated with a poorer prognosis, and SOFA scores are independent predictors of increased mortality among elderly SAE patients.

Microcystic, elongated, and fragmented (MELF) pattern is one of the myometrial invasion patterns in endometrioid endometrial carcinoma (EEC), and it has been associated with poor prognostic parameters, especially lymphovascular space invasion (LVSI) and lymph node metastasis (LNM). This study aims to represent the frequency of MELF pattern in EEC and the relationship between MELF pattern with clinicopathological parameters, overall survival (OS), and disease-free survival (DFS). ⋯ This study is one of the largest series examining the relationship between MELF pattern of myometrial invasion and survival, and our results represented that the MELF pattern is associated with the worse clinical outcome since it is associated with lymphovascular space invasion, deep myometrial invasion, lymph node metastasis, and reduced overall survival and disease-free survival rates. Although the presence of MELF pattern is not reported in routine practice, it may be used as an indicator that will help predict a worse outcome.
