Tandem mass spectrometry is helpful in diagnosing amino acid metabolism disorders, organic acidemias, and fatty acid oxidation disorders and can provide rapid and accurate diagnosis for inborn errors of metabolism. The aim of this study was to predict inborn errors of metabolism in children with the help of artificial neural networks using tandem mass spectrometry data. ⋯ The results showed that the proposed artificial neural networks are capable of predicting inborn errors of metabolism very accurately. Therefore, developing new technologies to identify and predict inborn errors of metabolism will be very useful.

The frequency of potentially inappropriate medication usage in community-dwelling oldest-old people.
It is critically important to protect the health of the oldest-old people, as their hospitalization and death rates are high. The objective of this study was to analyze the prevalence of potentially inappropriate medication use among the community-dwelling oldest-old people and its association with their demographic characteristics. ⋯ The prevalence of potentially inappropriate medication use was high among the oldest-old people in Turkiye. There were no differences in frequency of use according to age, sex, or geographical region. It is important to prevent the use of potentially inappropriate medications that should be avoided and to monitor the oldest-old group that uses potentially inappropriate medications that should be used with caution.

Anemia in the first week after birth, which could affect growth, development, and organ function, should be an important warning sign to clinicians. The aim of this study was to assess the related risk factors of early neonatal anemia and to analyze the effect of anemia on the expression levels of myocardial markers in newborns. ⋯ Multiple pregnancy, preterm birth, and abnormal placenta were identified as risk factors for early neonatal anemia. The occurrence of early neonatal anemia was associated with increased levels of myocardial markers.

This study aims to determine the possible embryotoxic effects of propofol on the cerebellum and spinal cord using fertile chicken eggs. ⋯ It was concluded that the in-ovo-administered propofol given immediately before incubation has adverse effects on the developing cerebellum and spinal cord. Therefore, it is important for anesthesiologists always to remain vigilant when treating female patients of childbearing age.

Phthalates are the materials used for plasticizing polyvinyl chloride. Di-(2-Ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) is one of the phthalates most frequently used in a wide range of applications, including medical equipment such as endotracheal and feeding tubes, intravenous catheters, central lines, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation sets, total parenteral nutrition bags, blood product sets, and intravenous pump lines, respiratory sets in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). Studies have shown that phthalates, including DEHP, can cross the placenta and blood-brain barrier, possibly leading to neurodevelopmental impairment in vitro and in vivo. However, the molecular mechanisms affected by phthalate exposure have not been explored in depth. This study aimed to illuminate the effects of DEHP on neuroinflammation at the molecular level using neonatal microglial cells as the model. ⋯ This study indicates that neonatal exposure to DEHP may be linked to neurodevelopmental impairment via inflammation-related cell death and ferroptosis. The prevalence of DEHP in NICU medical devices raises concerns about potential neurodevelopmental deficits, including disorders like autism and mental retardation. These findings highlight the urgency of addressing DEHP exposure in neonatal care.
