Analysis of the characteristics of influenza virus in imported cases in Guangxi province of China. ⋯ Imported influenza cases in Guangxi have occurred throughout the year, with higher numbers in winter and spring. The cases mostly came from Vietnam with influenza A. Relevant measures should be taken to control the further spread of the virus.

Numerous studies show that cancer risk is reduced by consumption of soy-based foods containing genistein, but its effects on the glycogen synthase kinase-3 pathway (GSK-3) in ovarian cancer is unknown. Therefore, we tested the properties of genistein on inflammatory biomarkers and GSK-3 signaling pathways in the ovaries of old laying hens with ovarian cancer. ⋯ Genistein exhibited an anticancer effect by reducing proinflammatory biomarkers levels and inhibiting GSK-3 expression in the ovaries of old laying hens. It is a potential candidate in the chemoprevention and/or treatment of ovarian cancer.

The differences in molecular mechanisms during stable period and the changes in the inflammatory responses during exacerbations between distinct severe asthma phenotypes remain unclear. In this study, we aimed to characterize stable and exacerbation period serum cytokine and periostin levels of 5 different pre-defined severe asthma phenotypes with real-life data. Changes in the viral infection-induced exacerbations were also analyzed. ⋯ Our study showed that serum periostin levels were decreased in viral infection-induced exacerbations and increased in the presence of eosinophilia independent from atopy and it can help to differentiate eosinophilia even if the patient is under long-term systemic steroid therapy. Also, serum IL-13 levels may reflect peripheral eosinophilia in patients without long term systemic steroid use.

Adipocytokines, adipose tissue-derived proteins, were demonstrated to be involved in the pathogenesis of breast cancer. We assessed the mRNA expression of resistin, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukins 6 and 8 (IL-6, and IL-8), and estrogen receptor alpha (ER-α) in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of women with and without breast cancer. ⋯ Breast cancer is not associated with increased expression of inflammatory cytokines in PBMCs. Our results suggested that a PBMC-based gene expression test may be developed to detect breast cancer early.

The outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has been an almost global pandemic with significant public health impacts. The increasing prevalence of malignancy has become a leading cause of human mortality. However, conflicting findings have been published on the association between malignancy and COVID-19 severity. This study aims to assess the pooled proportion of malignancy amongst 2019-nCov patients and to investigate the association between malignancy and COVID-19 severity. ⋯ Malignancy was associated with up to 2.3-fold higher risk of severe/critical COVID-19 and may serve as a clinical predictor for adverse outcomes.
