It is believed that radiotherapy has important effects on oxidant/antioxidant systems. Oxidative stress occurs when the balance between oxidant formation and antioxidant defense is disrupted in favor of oxidants. The aim of this study was to determine the biochemical changes in saliva pre- and postradiotherapy in head-neck radiotherapy patients and to find out the effects of radiation on glutathione (GSH), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in saliva. ⋯ These findings show that the changes in saliva GSH, GSH-Px, and MDA levels in patients with head-neck malignity intensified due to radiation.

Prostatic artery embolization (PAE) is a minimally invasive effective method in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The procedure is technically challenging, as pelvic vascular anatomy is highly prone to variations and the identification of the prostatic artery (PA) is the most time-consuming step, which can lead to increased procedure times. The aim of this study was to categorize the anatomic variations in the prostatic supply in patients with BPH treated with PAE. ⋯ Anatomic variations are common in the IIA and PA, showing racial and individual differences. Following a standard classification system to identify the origin of the PA is crucial and being aware of the most common types in each population will make PAE a faster and safer procedure.

To investigate the risk factors for evisceration in a gynecological oncology population. The secondary aim was to evaluate the impact of evisceration on survival. ⋯ Smoking, preoperative hypoalbuminemia, obesity, and high ASA scores (3and 4) were the prognostic factors for evisceration. Short-term modifiable factors such as smoking cessation and improved nutritional status should be considered in elective gynecological oncology surgeries. Evisceration had no impact on survival and recurrence in the patients with primary advanced stage epithelial ovarian-tubal-peritoneal cancer.

Despite the use of ultrasound guidance, a significant part of thyroid biopsies are nondiagnostic (ND). We aimed to investigate the utility of the preoperative modified systemic inflammation score (mSIS) to predict malignancies in patients with persistent ND thyroid nodules (TNs). ⋯ We recommend that when patients with persistent ND TNs are assigned to mSIS 2 or 1, surgery should not be delayed due to the risk of malignancy.

Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) is a complication of ovarian stimulation with increased vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and vascular permeability in the ovarian tissue. Transient receptor potential melastatin 2 (TRPM2) is known to be associated with angiogenesis and vascular permeability. In this experimental study, we aimed to investigate the activity of TRPM2 in the development of OHSS. ⋯ As a result of our experiment, it was found that increased TRPM2 immunoreactivity on hyperstimulated rat ovary may be the reason or result of edema and congestion. Further studies are needed to discuss our results.
