Prolonged hypercalcemia impairs renal function, and a reduced glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is typical in advanced primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT). There are scarce data related to predictors of renal impairment in patients with PHPT. Hence, we aimed to evaluate changes in kidney function in PHPT patients after parathyroidectomy (PTX) and identify factors associated with GFR variation in these patients. ⋯ Olderage, higher preoperative calcium, and GFR were factors associated with GFR increase in PHPT patients after parathyroidectomy. Further renal impairment was prevented by parathyroidectomy in PHPT patients

Does chest compression during cardiopulmonary resuscitation provide sufficient cerebral oxygenation?
Some of the patients suffering from cardiac arrest (CA) remain in a chronic unconscious state in intensive care units (ICUs). The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of chest compression (CC) on cerebral oxygenation during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). As a secondary goal, we attempted to determine the effects of regional cerebral oxygen saturation (rSO2) values on consciousness and the survival rate using the Full Outline of Unresponsiveness (FOUR) scoring method. ⋯ Our results suggest that the maximum rSO2 values affect ROSC while the minimum and mean rSO2 values affect the post-cardiac arrest neurological outcome.

PD-1 (programmed death-1) is an immune checkpoint receptor that modulates T-cell activity in peripheral tissues via interaction with its ligands, PD-L1 (programmed death-ligand 1) and PD-L2 (programmed death-ligand 2). Tumor cells upregulate PD-L1 or PD-L2 to inhibit this T lymphocyte attack. Our goal was to determine the PD-1 and PD-L2 expression rates of various hematologic malignancies, and evaluate whether PD-1 and PD-L2 expressions have an impact on prognosis. ⋯ Finally, we concluded that the role of the PD-1 pathway can be demonstrated by immunohistochemistry (IHC). Since we evaluated whether there is a correlation between the (IHC) results and survival of patients with MM, acute leukemia, and CLL, we could not demonstrate meaningful evidence that these markers have an impact on prognosis.

Ankaferd hemostat (ABS; Ankaferd blood stopper, İstanbul, Turkey) is a prohemostatic agent affecting erythrocytes. The hemostatic action of ABS depends upon fibrinogen gamma chain, prothrombin, and red blood cells. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of ABS on erythrocyte aggregation via hemorheological analyses. ⋯ ABS has antierythroid aggregation effect. ABS inhibits pathological aggregation of red blood cells. Antithrombotic clinical effects of ABS may be ascribed to the antierythroid aggregan actions of the drug.

Evaluation of myocardial dispersion of repolarization in patients with heart transplantation
The number of patients with heart transplantation has dramatically increased in the last decade. Considerable studies have suggested that the interval from the peak to the end of the electrocardiographic T wave (Tp-e) may correspond to the transmural dispersion of repolarization and increased Tp-e interval and Tp-e/QT ratio are associated with malignant ventricular arrhythmias. We analyzed the dispersion of myocardial repolarization using electrocardiographic Tp-e interval and Tp-e/QTc ratio in patients with heart transplantation. ⋯ Patients with heart transplantation have increased myocardial dispersion of repolarization.
