Measles is one of the important vaccine-preventable diseases with many complications in childhood. This study presents cross-sectional seroepidemiological data, beginning from neonatal cord blood in infants to children under 6 years of age, about waning of measles antibody and tries to suggest the proper time for measles immunization. ⋯ Though measles immunization coverage is 97% in Turkey, population immunity is somewhat lower than expected. Increases of measles cases in Europe and the refugee problem in the country could easily lead to outbreaks. Implementing the first dose of the immunization at 9 months may be an option.

Differentiating intestinal Behçet’s disease (BD) from Crohn’s disease (CD) is highly challenging, as they often mimic each other in terms of clinical manifestations. Endoscopy is an important modality for distinguishing bowel lesions. The study was designed to identify clinical manifestations that are easily confused and to evaluate the efficacy of endoscopy for distinguishing intestinal BD from CD by several overlapping signs. ⋯ Mucosal injuries were rarer in patients with intestinal BD than in those with CD. The differentiation model combining several endoscopy features appeared to be reliable for distinguishing between intestinal BD and CD.

Interferon-induced helicase (IFIH1) is a gene locus that has been recently defined as a candidate for susceptibility to generalized vitiligo (GV). The objectives of this study were to assess the association of IFIH1 gene, rs2111485, and rs1990760 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) with susceptibility to GV and the autoimmune diseases accompanying GV. ⋯ We detected that for SNP1, each T allel and for SNP2, each G allel are protective in terms of vitiligo development. Hereby, we confirmed that IFIH1 gene locus has a role in GV susceptibility.

GDF15, hepcidin and mitoferrin-1 (mfrn-1) are proteins involved in systemic iron regulation. There are no studies in the literature demonstrating the serum mfrn-1 levels in polycythemia vera (PV) and essential thrombocythemia (ET) patients. The aim of this study was to investigate GDF15, hepcidin and mfrn-1 levels in PV and ET patients. ⋯ Increased erythropoiesis in MPNs may lead to high GDF15 levels in these patients. However, hepcidin was not suppressed despite the increased GDF15 levels and erythropoiesis in these patients. Decrease in mfrn-1 in MPNs can be the result of its increased turnover due to increased myelopoiesis. It can be hypothesized that similar hepcidin levels in patients and controls and low mfrn-1 levels in patients may be a defense mechanism against erythroid activity and thromboembolic complications.

Thiol-specific antioxidant (TSA) protein is one of the most promising molecules among candidates for vaccine against cutaneous leishmaniasis. It was found to be significantly protective against different Leishmania species. In this study, cloning and molecular characterization of thiol-specific antioxidant gene of L. tropica Turkey isolate (LtTSA) were aimed. ⋯ LtTSA and its encoded TSA protein were found to be highly immunogenic and similar to TSA proteins previously tested as a vaccine candidate.
