Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a common neurological disorder that can be a leading cause of nontraumatic disability in several countries. Recent reports have indicated a moderate to high risk of MS in European countries. In this study, we examined the prevalence of MS in a well-defined urban population of provincial center in Sivas Province in Turkey. ⋯ For future studies, these high ratio results can be used in regional and national comparisons to determine cofactors contributing to the high prevalence of MS in our region and can help health-decision makers to better plan healthcare policies to improve neurological services and awareness about multifaceted clinical presentations of MS.

The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of virulence genes as well as patterns of antibiotic resistance in cystitis and pyelonephritis uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) isolates. ⋯ The frequency of virulence genes was not significantly different between pyelonephritis and cystitis UPEC strains in the studied patients, but the prevalence rates of hlyA and papC genes were higher among UPEC strains isolated from inpatients compared to outpatients; hence, they could be considered as useful targets for prophylactic interventions.

Following stroke, damage to the central nervous system and adaptive changes in muscle tissue are factors responsible for the loss of muscle strength. Even though it is suggested that early physiotherapy and mobilization prevent structural adaptive changes in muscle tissue, studies regarding this issue are insufficient. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of early physiotherapy and mobilization on quadriceps muscle thickness (QMT) in stroke patients. ⋯ It can be seen that QMT can be preserved and functional improvements can be provided through intense physiotherapy and mobilization initiated in the early period following stroke.

Lactic acid bacteria prevent the overgrowth of pathogenic agents and opportunistic pathogens in the vagina. Moreover, lactic acid bacteria contribute to the preservation of vaginal microbiota by producing antimicrobial agents. Previous studies showed that some lactic acid bacteria exhibited antimicrobial activity against Candida species causing yeast vaginosis as well as many bacterial pathogens. ⋯ The lactic acid bacteria are useful microorganisms associated with a variety of probiotic properties. In this sense, our lactic acid bacteria isolates with high antifungal activity may be promising candidates as probiotic microorganisms in the inhibition of vaginal candidiasis, which is one of the most prevalent problems, or in the protection against candidiasis. We will continue our studies in this area.

This study aimed to evaluate retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and ganglion cell complex (GCC) thicknesses using spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) in both unilateral and bilateral exfoliation syndrome (XFS) patients ⋯ Minimum GCC value may be the first parameter affected in the conversion of XFS to exfoliative glaucoma followed by RNFL changes.
