Efficacy of wound infiltration with lornoxicam for postoperative analgesia following thyroidectomy: a prospective, randomized, double-blind study.
Postoperative pain control constitutes a major problem and studies have focused on reducing opioid requirements using regional techniques. We aimed to investigate the efficacy of wound infiltration with lornoxicam on postoperative pain control following thyroidectomy. ⋯ Wound infiltration with lornoxicam neither improved postoperative pain control nor decreased total analgesic consumption.

Comparison of local infiltration anesthesia and peripheral nerve block: a randomized prospective study in hand lacerations.
To compare local infiltration anesthesia (LIA) and peripheral nerve block (PNB) in repairing hand lacerations. ⋯ Despite the fact that performing PNB in emergency departments requires some experience, it still counts as a convenient method comparable to LIA.

Ebola virus disease (EVD) was defined first in 1976. Since then, more than 24 epidemics have been reported from Africa, predominantly with the Zaire species. On 21 March 2014, the current West Africa outbreak was reported by the World Health Organization, the largest one ever recorded. ⋯ There is no approved prophylaxis, effective treatment, or licensed vaccine. Early diagnosis and isolation of the patients, contact tracing, appropriate use of personal protective equipment, and adherence to the guidance for safe funeral practices constitute the essential requirements to control the epidemics. This article provides a review of the literature regarding the characteristics and management of EVD outbreak.

The effect of tramadol and tramadol + gabapentin combination in patients with lumbar disc herniation after epidural steroid injection.
To compare the effects of tramadol-only treatment and tramadol + gabapentin treatment in patients who had received an epidural steroid injection. ⋯ This study revealed that tramadol + gabapentin treatment was not superior to tramadol treatment.

Comparison of helmet and facial mask during noninvasive ventilation in patients with acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: a randomized controlled study.
Noninvasive mechanical ventilation (NIMV) is an approach to prevent complications in acute respiratory failure. In this study we aimed to compare the efficacy of a full face mask and a helmet in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). ⋯ Both masks are efficient in improving the patients' outcome in COPD, but the decrease in PaCO2in the helmet group was slower than in the full face mask group.
