Neurodegeneration in ocular and central nervous systems: optical coherence tomography study in normal-tension glaucoma and Alzheimer disease.
To evaluate, in vivo, the optical coherence tomography (OCT) of the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and ganglion cell complex (GCC) in patients with normal-tension glaucoma (NTG) and those with Alzheimer disease (AD) in comparison with healthy subjects. ⋯ The average RNFL thickness, GCC thickness, and GLV rates may help in the diagnosis of AD as an additional examination and may provide some important clues about the duration of the disease.

Comparative study of virulence factors among ESβL-producing and nonproducing Pseudomonas aeruginosa clinical isolates.
β-Lactamase production is considered one of the most important resistance mechanisms amongvirulent Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates. The aim of this study was to compare the production and antimicrobial resistance patterns of some virulence factors in extended spectrum β-lactamase (ESβL)-producing and nonproducing P. aeruginosa clinical isolates. ⋯ The results of this study suggest a correlation between ESβL phenotype and the production of some factors that are reported to be involved in the virulence of P. aeruginosa.

Alpha-methylacyl-CoA racemase (AMACR), an intracellular enzyme involved in lipid metabolism, has emerged as an immunohistochemical marker for many types of cancer. Recent studies about the role of lipid metabolism in pathogenesis of mesothelioma have brought up some positive results. This study was conducted to investigate AMACR expression in the diagnosis of malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) and the correlation of this marker with clinical characteristics and survival. ⋯ The sensitivity of immunostaining was not high enough to use AMACR as a diagnostic tool in MPM. AMACR expression did not have a prognostic value in MPM, either.

To evaluate acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitory activity and antioxidant capacity of the major molecule from Salvia sp., rosmarinic acid, as a drug candidate molecule for treatment of Alzheimer disease (AD). ⋯ In this study in vitro and ex vivo studies and in silico docking research of rosmarinic acid were used simultaneously for the first time. Rosmarinic acid showed promising results in all the methods tested.
