Clinical Trial
A prospective study for an alternative probe site for pulse oximetry measurement in male patients with severe burn trauma: penile shaf.
Authors widely use pulse oximetry in clinical monitoring of heart rate (HR) and peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2) by attachment to the fingers; however, there can be a need for an alternative attachment site, especially for burned patients. We investigate the availability of a pulse oximeter probe attached to the penile shaft as an alternative site in pediatric male patients if all extremities became unavailable for pulse oximetry measurement due to severe burn and/or trauma. ⋯ This clinical trial demonstrated that pulse oximetry measurement under nonhypoxic conditions we could perform confidently using penile probes in pediatric male patients whose extremities are unavailable for measurement.

Milk fat globule-epidermal growth factor 8 (MFG-E8) is expressed in the endometrial epithelium and its expression increases during the implantation process. Due to this knowledge, we aimed to investigate the maternal serum MFG-E8 levels on both healthy pregnant women in the first trimester and pregnant women complicated with missed abortion and threatened abortion in the first trimester. ⋯ Although maternal serum MFG-E8 level seems to be a parameter that differ between live and nonlive pregnancies, studies with large number of cases are needed to discuss our results and to determine a cut-off value for prediction.

Elderly and very elderly individuals might be subject to different approaches for the treatment of hypertension. We aimed to compare drug utilization in hypertensive old patients and very old patients in primary care, along with the evaluation of potentially inappropriate drug prescribing. ⋯ Prescribing preferences to old and very old patients mostly showed slight differences. Almost half of prescriptions comprising antihypertensive monotherapy might imply hesitancy to prescribe combinations. Overuse of risky drugs such as furosemide in both groups, especially in the very elderly, requires more attention.

Family accommodation (FA) is associated with disease severity and response to treatment rates in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and is therefore particularly important in this patient group. This study investigated the structure of FA and associated factors in a Turkish society sample. ⋯ Clinicians should consider FA in the examination of OCD patients. High FA values for both frequency and severity suggestthat interventions directed toward FA may be associated with more positive outcomes in outpatient Turkish patients with OCD.

Ankaferd blood stopper® (ABS) is an herbal extract consisting of mixtures of Alpinia officinarum, Gycyrrhiza glabra, Vitis vinifera, Thymus vulgaris, and Urtica dioica plants and has been used in recent years in Turkish medicine as a hemostatic agent. Despite its extensive usage, there is no information available about the drug interaction in HepG2 cells. The current work evaluated the effect of ABS on the expression of CYP1A1-1A2, CYP2E1, and CYP3A4 isozymes that are primarily involved in drug and carcinogen metabolism. ⋯ Our study found that the activity, mRNA, and protein expression levels of CYP isozymes did not change with the application of ABS, suggesting that when humans are exposed to ABS, there may not be any risk associated with clinical drug toxicity, cancer formation, and drug metabolism disorders in humans.
