BACGROUND/AIM: Upper urinary tract urothelial carcinoma (UUT-UC) constitutes 5% of malignant neoplasms arising from transitional epithelium, but is more invasive than bladder cancer. Lzmphovascular invasion (LVI) is associated with biologically aggressive carcinoma and with occult metastases. The aim of this study was to investigate the correlation between LVI and immunohistochemical expression of two frequently routinely applied immunohistochemical biomarkers, Ki-67 and E-cadherin, in UUT-UC.

Because patients in intensive care units usully have an urinary catheter, the risk of urinary tract infection for these patients is higher than in other patients. The aim of this study was to identify risk factors and causative microrganisms in patients with catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) during a 6-year period. ⋯ The risk factors and causative microrganisms considering CAUTIs in the SICU must be considered in of planning CAUTIs prevention in this setting.

Postoperative infectious complications are one of the most important problems in surgical treatment of colorectal cancer (CRC), being present in up to 40% of patients. The aim of this paper was to establish the significance of serial measurement of C-reactive protein (CRP) in serum and matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) in drainage fluid for the detection of infectious complications and anastomotic leakage (AL) in patients with colorectal resection. ⋯ Serial measurement of CRP is recommended for screening of infectious complications of colorectal resection. Patients with CRP values above 139 mg/L on POD 5 cannot be discharged from hospital, and require an intensive search for infectious complications, particularly AL. MMP-9 measurement in drainage fluid is not relevant in the detection of AL in patients with colorectal resection.

Orbital floor blowout fracture is a common traumatic lesion of the craniofacial complex, but rarely in children population, consequently representing challenge in surgical treatment. Timely diagnosis and surgical treatment prevent the probability of the occurrence of the functional complications. ⋯ Delayed surgical treatment of blowout orbital floor fracture in children leads to unsatisfactory functional results in the majority of cases. In such a situation surgical correction of strabismus is necessary in order to obtain functionally quality vision and satisfactory aesthetic appearance.

Over the last 10 years more than 300 persons received cochlear implant in Serbia and more than 90% of the recipients were children under 10 years of age. The program of cochlear implantation includes postoperative rehabilitation in which cognitive, integrative and developmental methods are used. The study was conducted to reveal factors affecting communication performance (CP) of cochlear implanted (Cl) children. Special attention was focused on the influence of the duration and intensity of rehabilitation and hearing age on further development of communication skills. ⋯ Communication skills of CI children evaluated by FAPCI are falling behind normatives for normal hearing children 18.6 months on the average. Hearing age, duration and intensity of rehabilitation have positive predictive value for communication skills development. Later identification of hearing loss and later cochlear implantation lead to delayed development of communication skills.
