Comparative Study
[German translation of Suicidal Patient Observation Chart (SPOC) - an instrument for practice].
Nursing of suicidal in-patients is a complex and responsible task. A direct and immediate intensive caring and therapeutic supervision, also known as special observation is still recommended in guidelines (DGPPN, 2012) and maybe one of the most used interventions in the caring of suicidal patients in inpatient settings. It involves many kinds to develop the relationship between the observer and the patient. ⋯ The last step includes the proof of content validity by 52 nurses. The proof was able to identify a few misunderstandings and helped to enhance the tool in its final version. With the translation, the German-speaking nursing practice in psychiatry has a tool that can be used by psychiatric nurses regarding their complex interventions to be undertaken in this special group of patients.

Meta Analysis Comparative Study
[Timing of dressing removal in the healing of surgical wounds by primary intention: a meta-analysis].
An appropriate postoperative wound management helps to prevent surgical site infections. However, ideal timing of dressing removal is an unresolved issue in current practice. The objective of this systematic review therefore was to provide a comprehensive synthesis of existing evidence concerning the efficacy of different periods of postoperative dressing removal in surgical wounds which are healing by primary intention. ⋯ This meta-analysis did not show a higher rate of wound infections or other wound complications associated with an early dressing removal in wounds that are healing by primary intention: risk difference (RD) -0.01; 95%-confidence interval (CI) -0.03, 0.01. However, conclusions are limited due to bad study quality of included studies. Finally more sound research is needed.

Research results show that health literacy is an important concept in nursing. It has a positive effect on the health of individuals as well as on the costs of the healthcare system. The results of a comprehensive literature search (1980 - March 2009) revealed that the concept of health literacy is being increasingly discussed; however, the concept is barely addressed in literature specific to nursing. ⋯ The specific terms relevant to health literacy were identified. Moreover, an operational definition for health literacy was developed for the professional nursing setting. Possibilities for nursing practice, due to the conceptualization of health literacy, are discussed.

Pain and fear of falling (FOF) are modifiable factors that might play an important role in functional performance of nursing homes residents (NHR). Both factors are characterised by deficits in research and provision of long-term care services. The purpose of this study was to examine the functional performance of NHR with and without pain or FOF. ⋯ There was a statistically significant association between Pain or FOF und lower functional mobility. With respect to NHR able to walk, there was statistically significant association between Pain or FOF und lower performance in activities of daily living. Possibilities for interventions which might have positive effects on functional performance of NHR are an improved pain treatment and interventions to reduce FOF.
