The aim of this study was to evaluate the oxidative stress and metabolic activities of nurses working day and night shifts. Intensive care unit (ICU) (n=70) and ordinary service (OS) nurses (n=70) were enrolled in the study. Just before and the end of the shifts, blood samples were obtained to measure the participants' oxidative stress parameters. ⋯ Compared to the OS nurses, the ICU nurses' TAS, TOS, and OSI levels were not significantly different at the end of the day and night shifts. The metabolic activities of the OS and ICU nurses were found to be similar. As a result, the OS and ICU nurses' oxidative stress parameters and metabolic activities were not different, and all of the nurses experienced similar effects from both the day and night shifts.

[A systematic review of surgical hand antisepsis utilizing an alcohol preparation compared to traditional products].
Surgical hand antisepsis aims at preventing surgical site infections, an important cause of postoperative morbidity and mortality and escalating hospital costs. The objectives of this study were to compare the efficacy of alcohol preparations with traditional surgical hand antisepsis products by means of a systematic review of the literature. Primary and secondary studies were included, considering the microbial count or surgical site infection rates as outcomes. ⋯ Twenty-five studies were selected (two systematic reviews, nineteen experimental and four cohort studies). The alcohol preparations promoted a microbial reduction equal to and/or greater than traditional products in 17 studies, and a lesser reduction in four studies; similar surgical site infection rates were identified. Therefore, there is scientific evidence that support the safety of alcohol preparations for surgical hand antisepsis.

Sepsis associated with multiple organ failure such as acute kidney injury (AKI) shows a high mortality rate in critically ill patients. This study investigated the sepsis induced AKI in experimental models. ⋯ Physiological parameters (rectal temperature, mean arterial pressure-MAP, serum glucose and urinary flow); renal function (creatinine clearance); oxidative stress (urinary peroxides and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances-TBARS) and kidney histological analysis were evaluated. That study concludes that sepsis induces AKI by endothelial injury with hemodynamic dysfunction, release of inflammatory mediators and reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation by tubular cells, in an association of renal vasoconstriction due to hemodynamic and inflammatory disturbances.

Disability related to chronic low back pain (CLBP) is a complex and multidimensional phenomenon. The aim of the study was to identify the prevalence of disability and factors associated with disability outcome in 177 CLBP adults. Respondents were recruited from three health care service centers and answered questions from: Demographic Identification Form, Oswestry Disability Index, Chronic Pain Self-efficacy Scale, Tampa Scale Kinesiophobia, Beck Depression Inventory, and the Revised Piper Fatigue Scale. ⋯ The multiple regression model identified three factors as independently associated with disability: work situation, low self-efficacy and depression. The factors identified to be associated with disability are modifiable. Interventions such as work relocation, depression treatment and re-conceptualization of self-efficacy may have an important impact in preventing and reducing disability in chronic low back pain patients.

The objective of this study was to identify the factors that trigger hypothermia in patients in surgery, and the manifestations in the anesthesia recovery room. This study was performed in a large hospital of the City of Santos hospital network. Data were collected from 30 adult patients, whose body temperature when entering the surgical suite was between 36ºC and 37.2ºC, who underwent elective procedures and received general anesthesia. ⋯ From the moment the patient left the surgical suite until 30 minutes post-recovery in the anesthesia recovery room, patients remained hypothermic. Hypothermia was manifested by hypoxemia and shivering. In this study, it was shown that hypothermia in patients is triggered while in the surgical suite due to the lack of appropriate preventive measures, leading to complications in the anesthesia recovery period.
