The study had the purpose to investigate aspects of the ICUs from the Municipal district of São Paulo, regarding the composition of the clinical staff; characteristics of the nursing personnel and nurses' characterization. Data were collected through 47 questionnaires distributed in 32 hospitals. Results show that: the morning and the afternoon shifts have a larger number of people from all clinical categories, the majority of the nursing personnel work 36 hours per week, nurses' wages varied from 700 to 1,500 "reais" and 66.1% of them were enrolled in Master Programs. Authors concluded that 79.2% of the clinical staff was formed by the nursing personnel.

This article describes the tool used to collect data for nursing evaluation of patients with chronic pain patient in the League Against Pain of the University of São Paulo at Ribeirão Preto Faculty of Medicine, Brazil. The aim is to identify the patients' nursing care needs. ⋯ The Human Response Patterns, in which the nursing diagnoses are classified by NANDA, were used as a framework to construct the tool. The way it is used by nursing undergraduate students, members of the League Against Pain, is also described.

In this clinical investigation 35 patients under mechanical ventilation were studied. It was possible to establish the precision of two pulse oximeters of different brands. ⋯ Eventually critical patients may present conditions that limit the use of this technique. The study showed that the discrepancy in the results observed may be attributed to the presence of the methemoglobin and possible to anaemia associated to hypoxia.

There are in Brazil only 37 nursing doctors and doctoral students who obtained the Master degree in other area. A set of questions--concerning the reasons of the choice, the enrollment in the Program and the suggestions related to the nurses in similar situation and to the Nursing Schools--was mailed to this group. The answers showed that the option, in spite of being determined by several circumstances, sets up a valuable experience and is part of the history of the nursing graduate programs in Brazil.

In this study we investigate the language used by nurses in the characterization of postoperative pain. In order to do this, an instrument was elaborated containing initially 308 pain descriptors, which were studied as to their apparent and content validity. ⋯ The mean score and standard deviation were calculated for the scores obtained. The descriptors of highest ascriptions were, in a decreasing order: intense, strong, acute, unbearable and continuous; those of lower ascriptions were: circulating, assailing, circular, slow and formidable.
