Comparative StudyAre the results of surgical treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma poor if the tumor has spontaneously ruptured?
The aim of this study was to clarify whether the results of surgical treatment of ruptured hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) are poorer than the results of surgical treatment of non-ruptured HCC. ⋯ Hepatic resection as definitive treatment after recovery from the initial insult of the rupture of HCC yields results similar to those obtained by surgical treatment of non-ruptured HCC at the same tumor stage and with the same degree of liver damage.

Clinical Trial Controlled Clinical TrialGlucagon-like peptide-2 inhibits antral emptying in man, but is not as potent as glucagon-like peptide-1.
GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) and GLP-2 (glucagon-like peptide-2) are released in equimolar amounts in response to meal ingestion. GLP-1 inhibits gastric emptying and reduces postprandial gastric and exocrine pancreatic secretion and may play a physiological regulatory role in controlling appetite and energy intake in humans. The role of GLP-2 is more uncertain. Based on the results of animal studies, it has been suggested that GLP-2 may induce intestinal epithelial growth and inhibit gastric motility. The aim of this study was to determine to what extent GLP-2 alone or together with GLP-1 inhibits gastric emptying and the sensation of hunger in man. ⋯ Both GLP-1 and GLP-2 inhibit antral emptying in man, but GLP-1 is more potent.

Complicated endoscopic pediatric procedures using deep sedation and general anesthesia are safe in the endoscopy suite.
Complicated upper and lower endoscopic procedures of the gastrointestinal tract are performed in children for a variety of diagnostic and therapeutic reasons. Unlike adult patients, who receive conscious sedation, children usually require deep sedation (DS) or general anesthesia (GA). The aim of this study is to assess the safety parameters of complicated endoscopic procedures under DS or GA performed in children in the endoscopy suite rather than in the operating theatre. ⋯ The use of DS and GA for complicated endoscopies in a moderately high-risk pediatric population was found to be safe. The very low complication rate found in this study suggests that complicated pediatric patients can be managed successfully outside the operating theatre, provided that all the safety criteria for ambulatory DS or anesthesia are present.

Case ReportsMucinous cystadenoma of the ascending colon: a novel presentation.
Mucinous cystadenomas usually occur in the appendix, ovaries and pancreas. This is the first report to describe mucinous cystadenoma of the ascending colon. ⋯ Right colectomy revealed a cystic mass within the ascending colon that contained thick mucin and was lined by mucin-producing columnar epithelium. Clinical and pathologic features with a brief review of the literature are presented.
