Comparative StudyEffects of dobutamine on hepatosplanchnic hemodynamics in patients with chronic liver disease.
It is said that catecholamines increase hepatic blood flow in patients without liver diseases, although several reports have suggested a blunted response to catecholamines in patients with liver cirrhosis. ⋯ These results indicate that dobutamine has less effect on hepatic circulation in patients with liver cirrhosis than in those without liver diseases, indicating that the value of dobutamine in increasing hepatic blood flow in cirrhotic patients is very limited.

Ultrasonographic assessment of fasting liquid content in the human stomach.
Disturbed antroduodenal motility plays an important role in the pathophysiology of functional dyspepsia (FD). Such motility disturbances can be investigated by transcutaneous ultrasound. When it is measured in a standardized section, patients with FD have on an average significantly larger antral area than healthy controls. ⋯ The ultrasonographically measured antral area during fasting is highly reproducible. Enlarged fasting antral area reflects increased volume of gastric juice.

Comparative StudyHepatobiliary disease in ulcerative colitis. An analysis of 18 patients with hepatobiliary lesions classified as small-duct primary sclerosing cholangitis.
The aim of the present study was to describe the characteristics of patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) and hepatobiliary disease that does not satisfy the diagnostic cholangiographic criteria of primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) and to compare this group with PSC patients. ⋯ The patients in group II of this study constitute a major group with hepatobiliary lesions associated with UC, amounting to one-fourth the number of PSC patients. They have several similarities with classical PSC of the large bile ducts, and we suggest that they be classified as having small-duct PSC.

Serum selenium, copper, and zinc concentrations in Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.
Serum selenium, copper, and zinc levels were studied in 47 patients with Crohn's disease, 117 patients with ulcerative colitis, and 123 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. Serum selenium levels were lower and serum copper levels were higher in men and women with Crohn's disease than in controls (p < 0.001 and p < 0.01, respectively). ⋯ Men with pancolitis had significantly lower selenium and higher copper levels than men with proctitis. The implications of abnormal trace element status in patients with inflammatory bowel disease are discussed.
