Multicenter StudyPregnancy-related mortality from preeclampsia and eclampsia.
To examine the role of preeclampsia and eclampsia in pregnancy-related mortality. ⋯ The continuing racial disparity in mortality from preeclampsia and eclampsia emphasizes the need to identify those differences that contribute to excess mortality among black women, and to develop specific interventions to reduce mortality from preeclampsia and eclampsia among all women.

Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor in preterm and term pregnancy, parturition, and intra-amniotic infection.
[corrected] To determine the sources of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) in amniotic fluid and to examine its relation to labor and clinically diagnosed intra-amniotic infection. ⋯ Amniotic fluid G-CSF concentrations were similar in preterm and term pregnancies and were not significantly influenced by labor. Intra-amniotic infection was associated with an increased number of placental cells expressing the G-CSF receptor and higher concentrations of G-CSF in amniotic fluid, maternal serum, neonatal urine, and neonatal bronchoalveolar lavage samples.

Cesarean delivery and postpartum mortality among primiparas in Washington State, 1987-1996(1).
To examine the association between delivery method and mortality within 6 months of delivery among primiparas. ⋯ Cesarean delivery might be a marker for serious preexisting morbidities associated with increased mortality risk rather than a risk factor for death in and of itself. Data from additional sources such as medical records and autopsy reports are necessary to disentangle preexisting mortality risk from risk associated solely with delivery method.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study Clinical TrialAnalgesia for colposcopy: double-masked, randomized comparison of ibuprofen and benzocaine gel.
To evaluate pain relief effectiveness of oral ibuprofen and topical benzocaine gel during colposcopy. ⋯ Colposcopy is perceived as somewhat painful, but oral ibuprofen and topical benzocaine gel, alone or together, provided no advantage over placebo in decreasing colposcopy pain.
