Most ventilators measure airway occlusion pressure (occlusion P0.1) by occluding the breathing circuit; however, some ventilators can predict P0.1 for each breath without occlusion. Nevertheless, few studies have verified the accuracy of continuous P0.1 measurement. The aim of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of continuous P0.1 measurement compared with that of occlusion methods for various ventilators using a lung simulator. ⋯ The accuracy of continuous P0.1 measurements varies based on the characteristics of the ventilator and should be interpreted by considering the characteristics of each system. Moreover, measurements obtained with an occluded circuit could be desirable for determining the true P0.1.

Essential skills for respiratory therapists extend beyond the traditional scope of therapy. Respiratory therapists are expected to communicate effectively, deliver bedside education, and practice within interprofessional teams. Respiratory therapy entry-to-practice program accreditation standards require evaluation of student competence in communication and interprofessional practice. This study aimed to determine if entry into practice programs include curriculum and competency evaluation for oral communication, patient education, telehealth, and interprofessional activities. ⋯ Differences exist among program types for curriculum and competency evaluation. Telehealth was rarely included or evaluated at any degree level. Programs should evaluate the need for enhanced patient education and telehealth instruction.

The emerging challenges in the healthcare system require a vision for the future of respiratory care to ensure a successful transition to practice for new graduate respiratory therapists (RT). The nursing profession has recognized the need to acknowledge the successes and failures of graduates' transition to practice so that these programs can be continuously improved. The challenge is in identifying aspects of the transition to practice that may improve job satisfaction, retention, professional development, and patient care for RTs. This research aimed to explore the perceptions of new graduate RTs' experiences during their first year of practice and identify barriers and facilitators to a successful transition to practice. ⋯ New graduate RTs experienced many barriers to their transition to practice. Respiratory care leadership should identify barriers faced by new graduate RTs during their transition to practice. A nurse residency model may provide a framework for RT transition-to-practice programs. Improving transition-to-practice programs for new graduate RTs and surveying their experiences may lead to an increase in job satisfaction, retention, and improved patient care.
