Migraine affects one in 10 adults and is a debilitating condition. The symptoms and pathogenesis of migraine are discussed, including known triggers. Acute and prophylactic treatments currently available are described, as are alternative treatments such as acupuncture and yoga.

Basic and Advanced Life Support Guidelines should be followed as normal in cardiorespiratory arrest where there are 'special circumstances' such as near drowning, hypothermia, electrocution, poisoning, anaphylaxis and pregnancy. In order to increase the chances of a successful outcome there are specific considerations and actions that need to be taken. These will be discussed in this paper, the fifth in our resuscitation series.

This paper provides an overview of the benefits of using music therapy in intensive care. Music therapy is described as a complementary therapy and can be used to complement more conventional and medically oriented treatments available to patients who are critically ill. The physiological and psychological effects of this intervention are discussed.

This paper examines the rationale for actions taken by health-care professionals when managing adult patients who have had a cardiorespiratory arrest in hospital. The focus is on aspects of ventilation and chest compression, which are key features of cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
