Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is a common hospital-acquired infection that is associated with higher mortality rates, increased healthcare costs and longer hospitalisations. One intervention that has recently been used to reduce the prevalence of VAP is a new type of endotracheal tube impregnated with silver sulfadiazine. ⋯ More research is needed to assess whether the benefits of silver-coated endotracheal tubes, coupled with additional VAP prevention strategies, outweigh the costs incurred.

The essential nursing skills team at the University of the West of Scotland's Hamilton Campus introduced a contemporary holistic integrated teaching approach in September 2010 to engage students with essential nursing skills (phase 1). This article explores how this approach was further developed by introducing media in the form of a video (phase 2). It also reports student and peer evaluation of the use of multimedia and preferred formats, with recommendations for further development.
