Examining the impact of small bowel resection procedure timing in patients with blunt traumatic injury: a propensity-matched analysis.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of the timing of small bowel resection in small bowel injury on patients' outcomes. ⋯ More than 70% of the patient cases examined underwent SBR within 4 h of hospital arrival. However, there were no significant differences identified in the mortality rate or the discharge disposition regardless of the timing of the SBR (≤ 4 vs > 4-24 h). However, the patients whose SBR was performed within 4 h of arrival had a lower hospital length of stay when compared with those whose procedure was delayed.

Comparative StudyEmergency department thoracotomy of severely injured patients: an analysis of the TraumaRegister DGU®.
Emergency department thoracotomy (EDT) may be the last chance for survival in some severe thoracic trauma. This study investigates a representative collective with the aim to compare the findings in Europe to the international experience. Moreover, the influence of different levels of trauma care is investigated. ⋯ Just over half of EDTs were performed in STC. Emergency room resuscitation followed by EDT had survival rates of 4.8% and 20.7% for blunt and penetrating trauma patients, respectively.

Epidemiology and treatment of distal radius fractures: current concept based on fracture severity and not on age.
A shift towards surgical treatment of distal radius fractures seems to be apparent. The purpose of the present study was to assess current epidemiological data, the fracture severity according to the AO classification and the changing trend in the treatment. ⋯ Our findings confirmed the increasing popularity of surgical intervention with open reduction and internal fixation. Contrary to previous studies, the fracture type profile showed an equal proportion of type A and C fractures and the indication for surgical treatment correlated with fracture severity and not age.

Prognostic factors affecting survival of patients with intertrochanteric femoral fractures over 90 years treated with proximal femoral nailing.
This study aimed to analyze the prognostic factors affecting the survival of patients over 90 years with intertrochanteric fractures treated with proximal femoral nailing. ⋯ An ASA score of 4 increased mortality by a factor of 26 and delay to surgery increased mortality by a factor of 1.3. Both were prognostic factors influencing overall survival.

Laparotomy following cardiopulmonary resuscitation after traumatic cardiac arrest: is it futile?
The outcome of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) after traumatic cardiac arrest is very poor. Moreover, some consider laparotomy for abdominal trauma after CPR futile. This study aimed to investigate the outcomes of trauma patients who were pulseless and received CPR followed by laparotomy. ⋯ The survival rate for laparotomy following CPR after traumatic cardiac arrest was very poor. However, laparotomy following CPR is not always futile.
