Observational StudyExtension of the thoracic spine sign as a diagnostic marker for thoracic trauma.
The initial evaluation of patients with thoracic trauma remains a diagnostic challenge for surgery and emergency physicians. Chest sonography plays a key role in the approach for this group of patients, through extended and focused evaluation with trauma sonography (E-FAST). ⋯ Extension of the thoracic spine sign allows rapid identification of the presence, and more precisely, the absence of pleural effusion. This, therefore, allows an appropriate diagnosis and approach in the emergency room in patients with chest trauma.

Overall management of emergency general surgery patients during the surge of the COVID-19 pandemic: an analysis of procedures and outcomes from a teaching hospital at the worst hit area in Spain.
To assess how the COVID-19 outbreak has affected emergency general surgery (EGS) care during the pandemic, indications for surgery, types of procedures, perioperative course, and final outcomes. ⋯ Non-operative management (NOM) was undertaken in a third of patients, and only 14% of operated patients had a perioperative confirmation of -CoV-2 infection. The severity and morbidity of COVID-19-infected patients was much higher. Late presentations for medical care may have added to the high morbidity of the series.

Identifying risk factors of cerebrovascular injuries following blunt mandible fracture; a retrospective study from a national data base.
The purpose of this study was to determine the risk factors of cerebrovascular injury (CVI) in patients with blunt mandible fractures. ⋯ The patients with mandible fracture who were female and sustained a high impact blunt force mechanism had a significantly higher risk of CVI. These high-risk patients should be screened for CVI at the time of initial evaluation.

Observational StudyThe ICON Trauma Study: the impact of the COVID-19 lockdown on major trauma workload in the UK.
The global pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2 has impacted population health and care delivery worldwide. As information emerges regarding the impact of "lockdown measures" and changes to clinical practice worldwide; there is no comparative information emerging from the United Kingdom with regard to major trauma. ⋯ Patients admitted during the COVID-19 pandemic were older, frailer, more co-morbid and had an associated increased risk of mortality.

Nailing of proximal ulna fractures: biomechanical comparison of a new locked nail with angular stable plating.
Proximal ulna fractures are common injuries and frequently treated with angular stable plating. This surgical option shows good functional results. Relevant drawbacks such as large soft tissue exposure, compromised blood supply of fracture fragments and disturbing osteosynthetic material are described. The aim of this study was to compare a new locked proximal ulna nail with angular stable plating in a biomechanical testing setup for extraarticular proximal ulna fractures. ⋯ Nailing of proximal ulna fractures shows significantly higher primary stability and lower loosening compared to angular stable plating in our testing setup.
