Tibial plateau fractures in Belgium: epidemiology, financial burden and costs curbing strategies.
We describe the incidence of tibial plateau fractures and the evolution of its management and financial burden in Belgium, perform a similar audit at University Hospitals Leuven, and define strategies to curb the increasing cost. ⋯ Level IV.

Are orthopaedic surgeons prepared? An analysis of severe casualties from the 2021 flash flood and mudslide disaster in Germany.
The purpose of this study was to describe and analyse the most severe casualties from the flash flood and mudslides occurring on 14 July 2021 in Germany, focusing on patients who were treated in the closest and largest level I trauma centre in the region the disaster occurred. ⋯ The July 2021 flood disaster was one of the largest in German history. The included patients showed complex injuries of various types. Because of the effects of climate change, orthopaedic surgeons might face higher numbers of casualties affected by natural disasters. Learning more about the management and profile of these injuries can become a future challenge for orthopaedic and trauma surgeons.

Optimal preoperative timing for prevention of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in patients over 60 years of age with intertrochanteric fractures.
To investigate the incidence and risk factors of preoperative DVT in elderly patients with intertrochanteric fracture of the femur and determine the optimal preoperative time. ⋯ In this study, elderly patients with intertrochanteric femur fracture had a higher incidence of deep vein thrombosis before surgery. Early identification of DVT-related risk factors may contribute to individualized risk assessment and preventing adverse outcomes in patients with intertrochanteric fractures.

Injuries from civilian under-vehicle improvised explosive devices: an analysis of the Israeli National Trauma Registry during the years 2006-2020.
Under-vehicle explosions caused by improvised explosive devices (IED) came to the public's attention during armed conflicts. However, IEDs are also used by criminals in the civilian setting. This study aimed to determine the pattern of injury, medical management, and outcomes of civilians injured during under-vehicle explosions caused by IEDs. ⋯ Injuries caused by under-vehicle IEDs in civilian settings differ from those caused by IEDs used during military conflicts or acts of terrorism: they are associated with fewer victims per incident, more severe injuries, more truncal injuries, and more lower extremity injuries requiring amputations. This can be attributed to the lack of personal and vehicle protection, and the different explosive types.

Epidemiology of paediatric lower extremity fractures in a tertiary care center in Switzerland.
About 20% of all fractures in children occur at the lower extremity. This study aims to investigate the epidemiology and injury pattern of lower extremity fractures within the pediatric population consulting a tertiary referral hospital in Switzerland. ⋯ Board sports seems to be a leading cause of tibial shaft fracture in our region. Nevertheless, only 18% of fractures had recourse to an orthopedic surgeon, hence the importance of the teaching quality of pediatric residents for conservative fracture treatment.
