ReviewContrast study after gastric repair: a review of incidence, outcomes and risk factors at an adult level 1 trauma center.
The role of contrast study after traumatic gastric repair, continues to be controversial. To that end, we aim to review the incidence, outcomes, and risk factors of patients undergoing contrast study after traumatic gastric repair. ⋯ Gastric leak after repair is rare and there is no statistically significant difference in clinical outcomes when comparing patients who underwent contrast study to those who did not. Routine contrast study after traumatic gastric repair may not be necessary and further evidence is warranted to determine the risk factors for a selective contrast study.

Randomized Controlled TrialIntra-operative ultrasound: does it improve the results of percutaneous repair of acute Achilles tendon rupture?
Percutaneous repair is a good option for acute Achilles tendon rupture. Although it overcomes the complications of open technique, it carries the risk of sural nerve injury and inadequate repair. In this study, we explore if the use of intra-operative ultrasound with percutaneous technique has any advantageous effect on final results of repair. ⋯ The use of an intra-operative ultrasound with percutaneous repair of acute rupture of Achilles tendon can improve the quality of repair as evidenced by quicker satisfactory healing and earlier regain of activity. Also, it can help in proper localization of sural nerve in relation to lateral edge of Achilles tendon.

Physical examination, laboratory tests, ultrasound, conventional radiography, multislice computed tomography (MSCT), and diagnostic laparoscopy are used for diagnosing blunt abdominal trauma. In this article, we investigate and evaluate the usefulness and limitations of various diagnostic modalities on the basis of a comprehensive review of the literature. ⋯ MSCT is the gold standard diagnostic modality for blunt abdominal trauma because of its high sensitivity and specificity in detecting relevant intra-abdominal injuries. In many cases, however, clinical, laboratory and imaging findings must be interpreted jointly for an adequate evaluation of a patient's injuries and for treatment planning since these data supplement and complement one another. Patients with blunt abdominal trauma should be admitted for clinical observation over a minimum period of 24 h since there is no investigation that can reliably rule out intra-abdominal injuries.

Multicenter StudyDevelopment and validation of the first performance assessment scale for interdisciplinary chest tube insertion: a prospective multicenter study.
Chest tube insertion requires interdisciplinary teamwork including an emergency surgeon or physician in conjunction with a nurse. The purpose of the study was to validate an interdisciplinary performance assessment scale for chest tube insertion developed from literature analysis. ⋯ This first performance assessment scale for interdisciplinary chest tube insertion is valid and reliable.

In-hospital delay of surgery increases the rate of complicated appendicitis in patients presenting with short duration of symptoms: a retrospective cohort study.
Current practice allows for surgery for acute appendicitis to be delayed up to 24 h in the belief that there will be no increase in complicated appendicitis rates. We evaluated the combined effect of Patient Time (between symptom onset and hospital admission) and Hospital Time (between hospital admission and surgery) on the surgical outcome. We hypothesized that in patients with a short Patient Time, increased Hospital Times will be associated with a higher rate of complicated appendicitis, even in patients operated within 24 h. ⋯ Study registered as ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT04689906 ( https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT04689906?term=ashkenazi+itamar&draw=2&rank=2 ).
