Use of an intramedullary fibular strut allograft and dual locking plate in periprosthetic fractures above total knee arthroplasty: new application of a well-known treatment method in trauma.
Augmenting fracture fixation with intramedullary fibular graft has seen several applications such as in comminuted proximal humerus fractures, and femoral neck and shaft nonunion. The purpose of this study was to report the first case series demonstrating the novel application of an intramedullary fibular allograft strut and dual locking plates on complicated periprosthetic fracture of distal femur. ⋯ Surgical technique and Cases-series.

Volume-outcome relationships in laryngeal trauma processes of care: a retrospective cohort study.
The extent to which patients with laryngeal trauma undergo investigation and intervention is largely unknown. The objective of this study was to therefore determine the association between hospital volume and processes of care in patients sustaining laryngeal trauma. ⋯ Hospital volume may be associated with processes of care in laryngeal trauma. Additional research is required to investigate how these findings relate to patient and health system outcomes.

Trends in incidence rate, health care use, and costs due to rib fractures in the Netherlands.
This study aimed to examine population-based trends in the incidence rate, health care consumption, and work absence with associated costs in patients with rib fractures. ⋯ Rib fractures are common and associated with lengthy HLOS and work absenteeism as well as high direct and indirect costs which appear to be similar between patients with one or multiple rib fractures and mostly affected by admitted patients and age.

Closed wedge osteotomy for middle phalanx physeal injuries associated with angulation deformities in children.
Middle phalanx physeal fractures in children are rare, and proper treatment gives good results. Despite treatment, these fractures may lead to physeal arrest and growth disturbances leading to severe angulation deformities. Closed wedge osteotomy with internal fixation efficiently corrects the angulation deformities in children. ⋯ IV.

Does augmentation increase the pull-out force of symphyseal screws? A biomechanical cadaver study.
Open reduction and internal fixation using anterior plate osteosynthesis currently represents the gold standard for the treatment of symphyseal disruptions. Since postoperative screw loosening with consequent implant failure is frequently observed, this study aims to evaluate if and to what extent augmentation can increase the pull-out force of symphyseal screws to improve the constructs stability. ⋯ Primary and secondary augmentation significantly increases the stability of symphyseal screws and, therefore, potentially decreases rates of implant failure.
