Fracture fixation in extremity trauma with carbon fiber-reinforced polyetheretherketone (CFR-PEEK) plates: evidence today.
To compare the CFR-PEEK plates with conventional plates in fracture fixation with regards to clinical and radiological outcomes and complications. ⋯ CFR-PEEK plates have high union rates in extremity fracture fixation similar to conventional plates with comparable good clinical outcomes and a very low and comparable rate of complications. Considering their advantages, CFR-PEEK plates seem to be valid alternative to conventional plating.

Multicenter StudySelective non-operative management of penetrating abdominal injuries at Northern European trauma centers: the NordiPen Study.
A selective nonoperative management (SNOM) of penetrating abdominal injuries (PAI) is a standard of care in numerous established trauma centers. However, available evidence supporting SNOM of PAI in European settings remains scarce. Thus, we performed a multi-center study at selected Northern European trauma centers to investigate the management and outcomes of PAI. We hypothesized that despite a low number of penetrating injuries in included trauma centers, SNOM is successfully utilized with outcomes comparable with trauma centers with a high number of PAI. ⋯ SNOM of PAI is a safe practice even in regions with a low prevalence of penetrating injuries. The outcomes in our study are comparable with results from trauma centers treating larger numbers of patients with PAI.

A retrospective data analysis on the induction medications used in trauma rapid sequence intubations and their effects on outcomes.
Rapid sequence intubation (RSI) in trauma patients is common; however, the induction agents used have been debated. We determined which induction medications were used most frequently for adult trauma RSIs and their associations with hemodynamics and outcomes. We hypothesized that etomidate is the most commonly used induction agent and has similar outcomes to other induction agents. ⋯ Etomidate was most commonly used in ED intubations; propofol was most used in the OR. Compared to propofol, patients induced with etomidate had higher mortality and complication rates. Findings should be interpreted with caution given limited generalizability and residual confounding by indication.

Knowledge and skills of emergency physicians in managing traumatic dental injuries.
Emergency departments are frequently confronted with traumatic dental injuries (TDIs). The prognosis of the injured tooth is related to early dental trauma management. For this reason, physicians must be familiar with the appropriate management of TDI. This study aimed to investigate the knowledge and skills of German emergency physicians regarding TDI. ⋯ The knowledge and skills in dental trauma management among German emergency physicians are generally inadequate. Targeted training courses are necessary to ensure early and adequate TDI treatment to reduce the resulting medical and societal costs as much as possible.

Pelvic fractures in severely injured elderly: a double-adjustment propensity score matched analysis from a level I trauma center.
Pelvic trauma has increased risk of mortality in the elderly. Our study aimed to analyze the impact of the additional burden of pelvic fractures in severely injured elderly. ⋯ At a Level I Trauma Center the additional burden of pelvic fractures in seriously injured elderly did not translate into higher mortality. PSM without covariate adjustment suggests worse rates among pelvic trauma patients for DVT and VAP but covariate adjustment removed statistical significance for both outcomes. Pelvic trauma patients had shorter time on ventilator and in the ICU. Whether similar analytic methods applied to patients from larger data sources would produce similar findings remains to be seen.
