Functional outcomes of internal fixation of scapula fractures due to high-velocity gunshot injuries.
Open fractures of the scapula are relatively rare and only a few studies are interested in this subject. This study aims to demonstrate the results of internal fixation of open scapula fractures due to gunshot injuries. ⋯ In the treatment of open scapula fractures due to gunshot injuries, an internal fixation is a reliable option and the results were comparable with previous studies.

Determinants of long-term unplanned readmission and mortality following self-inflicted and non-self-inflicted major injury: a retrospective cohort study.
To describe the characteristics of major injury and identify determinants of long-term unplanned readmission and mortality after self-inflicted and non-self-inflicted injury to inform potential readmission screening. ⋯ Unplanned readmission after injury is associated with injury intent, age, and comorbid health. Screening for anxiety and drug-related dependence after major injury, accompanied by service referrals and post-discharge follow-up, has potential to prevent readmission.

The spanning plate as an internal fixator in complex distal radius fractures: a prospective cohort study.
Minimal invasive temporary spanning plate (SP) fixation of the wrist has been described as an alternative treatment method in complex distal radius fractures (DRFs). The purpose of this study is to conduct an outcome analysis of all consecutive DRFs treated by SP fixation representing the so far largest published patient cohort outside the United States. ⋯ The radiological, functional and patient-rated outcomes in this study are remarkably good considering the complexity of the included fractures. Therefore, this method represents a valuable alternative for the treatment of complex DRFs in selected patients.

Various classification systems describe fractures of the acetabulum and pelvis separately. Horizontal shear fractures involve the pelvic ring and both acetabula and have not been previously described. The aim of this study is to describe the horizontal shear fracture of the pelvis. ⋯ The horizontal shear fracture of the pelvis is a high-energy injury characterised by separation of the anterior and posterior pelvic ring through the acetabula. Good outcomes can be achieved with open reduction and internal fixation of displaced fractures.

Strategies for the treatment of femoral fractures in severely injured patients: trends in over two decades from the TraumaRegister DGU®.
Treatment strategies for femoral fracture stabilisation are well known to have a significant impact on the patient's outcome. Therefore, the optimal choices for both the type of initial fracture stabilisation (external fixation/EF, early total care/ETC, conservative treatment/TC) and the best time point for conversion from temporary to definitive fixation are challenging factors. ⋯ Our results show the changes in the surgical treatment of severely injured patients with femur fractures over a period of almost two decades caused by the introduction of modern surgical strategies (e.g., Safe Definitive Surgery). It remains unclear which subgroups of trauma patients benefit most from these strategies.
