The effects of COVID-19 pandemic on emergency anterior abdominal wall hernia surgery: is it safe to postpone elective hernia surgery in the pandemic?
The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on emergency anterior abdominal wall hernia surgeries (EAAWHS) by comparing the pandemic period with the control period a year ago and to share our experiences in the pandemic period. ⋯ Despite the increase in the number of EAAWHS during the COVID-19 pandemic, there was no significant difference in mortality and morbidity rates. EAAWHS can be performed safely during the pandemic by taken necessary and adequate precautions.

The use of Verbrugge forceps for reduction of the posterior column element in displaced acetabular fractures: clinical and radiological evaluation.
Different reduction techniques and tools are described to facilitate anatomical reduction of acetabular fractures. However, maintenance of reduction, plate placement, and fracture fixation remain a challenge owing to the large surface area occupied by the available reduction tools. This study aims at radiological and functional assessment of the effectiveness of a novel reduction technique for the posterior column element in displaced acetabular fractures. ⋯ The use of the conventional large Verbrugge bone-holding forceps for the reduction of the posterior column element in displaced acetabular fractures using the Kocher-Langenbeck approach is a safe, effective, time-saving, and technically undemanding procedure.

Blunt popliteal artery injury following tibiofemoral trauma: vessel-first and bone-first strategy.
Blunt popliteal artery injury (BPAI) is a potentially limb-threatening sequela of tibiofemoral (knee) dislocations and fractures. Associated amputation rates for all popliteal artery (PA) injuries range between 10 and 50%. It is unclear whether PA repair or bone stabilization should be performed first. We analyzed (long-term) clinical outcomes of BPAI patients that received initial PA repair (vessel-first, VF) versus initial external stabilization (bone-first, BF). ⋯ Blunt popliteal artery injury (BPAI) is a rare surgical emergency. Long-term outcomes of early revascularization for BPAI appear to be good, independent of initial management strategy. The BF strategy may be preferred in case of severe orthopedic injury, if allowed by total ischemia duration.

Role of triangular osteosynthesis in vertically unstable transforaminal sacrum fractures: clinical and radiological outcomes.
We aim to report clinical and radiological results of triangular osteosynthesis for a homogenous group of vertically unstable transforaminal sacral fractures. ⋯ Triangular osteosynthesis is a reliable procedure in treating unstable transforaminal sacral fractures. It permits early weight-bearing and facilitates faster functional recovery. Careful attention to details such as sacral dysmorphism, soft tissue injury, implant placement and anterior pelvic injury helps in keeping complications to an acceptable rate.

Use of a modified Delphi process to develop research priorities in major trauma.
The burden of major trauma within the UK is ever increasing. There is a need to establish research priorities within the field. Delphi methodology can be used to develop consensus opinion amongst a group of stakeholders. This can be used to prioritise clinically relevant, patient-centred research questions to guide future funding allocations. The aim of our study was to identify key future research priorities pertaining to the management of major trauma in the UK. ⋯ Consensus within the major trauma community has identified 56 key research questions across 6 categories. Dissemination of these questions to funding bodies to allow for the development of high-quality research is now required. There is a clear indication for targeted multi-centre multi-disciplinary research in major trauma.
