ReviewBone defect treatment: does the type and properties of the spacer affect the induction of Masquelet membrane? Evidence today.
High clinical success rates have been reported with the Masquelet technique in the treatment of traumatic bone loss. An increasing number of studies suggest that various factors can influence the properties of induced membranes. Goal of this systematic review is to answer the following questions: (1) which are the ideal spacer properties (material, surface topography, antibiotic supplementation) to booster the quality and osteogenic potential of induced membranes? (2) what is the ideal time to perform the second-stage operation? ⋯ Membranes induced by smooth PMMA spacers loaded with low concentrations of antibiotics showed powerful osteogenic properties. Other materials such as Polypropylene or Calcium sulfate can also be used with good results. Despite current recommendation to perform the second stage operation in 4-8 weeks, membranes older than 8 weeks seem to have similar regenerative capacities to younger ones.

ReviewA systematic review of penetrating perineal trauma in a civilian setting.
Penetrating injuries to the perineum and associated pelvic organs have largely been reported in the military. Given the rarity of presentation and unique clinical characteristics of these injuries, we set out to address the gap in the literature in civilian settings. ⋯ Penetrating perineal trauma in the civilian population poses a considerable challenge to clinicians, compounded by the potential for multisystem injury requiring involvement of different medical and surgical specialties.

How to assess applicability and methodological quality of comparative studies of operative interventions in orthopedic trauma surgery.
It is challenging to generate and subsequently implement high-quality evidence in surgical practice. A first step would be to grade the strengths and weaknesses of surgical evidence and appraise risk of bias and applicability. Here, we described items that are common to different risk-of-bias tools. We explained how these could be used to assess comparative operative intervention studies in orthopedic trauma surgery, and how these relate to applicability of results. ⋯ The set of items will be useful to form a first judgment on studies, for example when including them in a systematic review. Existing risk of bias tools can be used for further evaluation of methodological quality. Additionally, the proposed set of items and signaling questions might be a helpful starting point for peer reviewers and clinical readers.
