ReviewEuropean Society of Trauma and Emergency Surgery (ESTES) recommendations for trauma and emergency surgery preparation during times of COVID-19 infection.
A series of recommendations regarding hospital perioperative preparation for the COVID-19 pandemic were compiled to inform surgeons worldwide on how to provide emergency surgery and trauma care during enduring times. The recommendations are divided into eight domains: (1) General recommendation for surgical services; (2) Emergency Surgery for critically ill COVID-19 positive or suspected patients -Preoperative planning and case selection; (3) Operating Room setup; (4) patient transport to the OR; (5) Surgical staff preparation; (6) Anesthesia considerations; (7) Surgical approach; and (8) Case Completion. The European Society of Emergency Surgery board endorsed these recommendations.

ReviewA nationwide fluidics biobank of polytraumatized patients: implemented by the Network "Trauma Research" (NTF) as an expansion to the TraumaRegister DGU® of the German Trauma Society (DGU).
To decrypt the complexity of the posttraumatic immune responses and to potentially identify novel research pathways for exploration, large-scale multi-center projects including not only in vivo and in vitro modeling, but also temporal sample and material collection along with clinical data capture from multiply injured patients is of utmost importance. To meet this gap, a nationwide biobank for fluidic samples from polytraumatized patients was initiated in 2013 by the task force Network "Trauma Research" (Netzwerk Traumaforschung, NTF) of the German Trauma Society (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Unfallchirurgie e. ⋯ For the first time, an integrated platform to prospectively evaluate and monitor candidate biomarkers and/or potential therapeutic targets in biological specimens of quality-controlled and documented patients is introduced, allowing reduction in variability of measurements with high impact due to its large sample size. Thus, the project was introduced to systemically evaluate and monitor multiply injured patients for their (patho-)physiological sequalae together with their clinical treatment strategies applied for overall outcome improval.

Evolution of a Dedicated Emergency Surgery and Trauma (ESAT) unit over 3 years: sustained improved outcomes.
The traditional 24-h call model faces pressure from competing needs between emergency and elective services. Recognizing this, a dedicated ESAT service was developed in Khoo Teck Puat Hospital in Singapore, with improved clinical outcomes. It was initially led by a single consultant (SC) in 2014, and subsequently evolved to a weekly consultant rotation (WC) roster in 2017 to achieve sustainability. ⋯ The ESAT WC service has sustained improved outcomes in our institution.

Comparative StudyComparison of fracture healing and long-term patient-reported functional outcome between dorsal and volar plating for AO C3-type distal radius fractures.
This study aimed to evaluate the differences in long-term functional outcome and radiographic fracture healing between volar and dorsally approached comminuted intra-articular distal radius fractures (DRF) (AO C3-type). ⋯ Dorsal locking plating fixation in C3-type DRFs resulted in a minimal, but statistically significant, volar collapse of sagittal tilt compared with volar locking plating fixation. However, this difference in volar collapse did not significantly influence the long-term clinical outcome.

The influence of alcohol on the outcome of trauma patients: a matched-pair analysis of the TraumaRegister DGU®.
In the diagnosis and treatment of trauma patients, numerous individual and trauma-related factors must be considered, all of which may influence the outcome. Although alcohol exposure is a major risk factor for an accident, its influence on the outcome is unclear. This matched-pair analysis investigates the hypothesis that alcohol has no negative impact on the outcome of trauma patients. ⋯ Our data demonstrate that alcohol exposure in trauma patients has no impact on complication or mortality rates. On the other hand, there are initially clear differences in the mechanism of injury, sedation, mode of transport and the acid-base balance.
