Irritable temperament profile prevails among patients with boxer fractures.
The purpose of this prospective study was to examine the temperament dimensions of the patients with boxer fracture and compare them with age- and sex-matched controls. ⋯ The understanding of mood of patients with boxer fractures will help us to enhance treatment plan and may prevent further intentional injuries by providing an insight into better controlling physical health of the patients.

β-Blocker after severe traumatic brain injury is associated with better long-term functional outcome: a matched case control study.
Severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) is the predominant cause of death and disability following trauma. Several studies have observed improved survival in TBI patients exposed to β-blockers, however, the effect on functional outcome is poorly documented. ⋯ Exposure to β-blockers in patients with severe TBI appears to improve functional outcome. Further prospective randomized trials are warranted.

Survival prediction of trauma patients: a study on US National Trauma Data Bank.
Exceptional circumstances like major incidents or natural disasters may cause a huge number of victims that might not be immediately and simultaneously saved. In these cases it is important to define priorities avoiding to waste time and resources for not savable victims. Trauma and Injury Severity Score (TRISS) methodology is the well-known and standard system usually used by practitioners to predict the survival probability of trauma patients. However, practitioners have noted that the accuracy of TRISS predictions is unacceptable especially for severely injured patients. Thus, alternative methods should be proposed. ⋯ Random Forests may be a good candidate solution for improving the predictions on survival upon the standard TRISS methodology.

The impact of measurement of respiratory quotient by indirect calorimetry on the achievement of nitrogen balance in patients with severe traumatic brain injury.
This study evaluated the impact of IC on the optimization of nutritional support and the achievement of +NB in patients with TBI. ⋯ An increase in kcal ≥25 % in patients with a RQ < 0.83 on day 3 improves substrate utilization, decreases protein utilization and optimizes the achievement of +NB by day 7.

Addition of a general surgeon without addition of appropriate support is inadequate to improve outcomes of trauma patients in a rural setting: a cohort study of 1962 consecutive patients.
Trauma care poses many challenges in small hospitals in rural settings. This report was designed to assess the role of a rural general surgeon with trauma patients. ⋯ The presence of a solo general surgeon was not found to be adequate for improving the outcome for trauma patients in a rural hospital.
