Magnetic resonance imaging for acute appendicitis in pregnancy: can clinical scores predict when imaging is needed?
Advanced imaging may augment the diagnostic milieux for presumed acute appendicitis (AA) during pregnancy, however it is not clear when such imaging modalities are indicated. The aim of this study was to assess the sensitivity and specificity of clinical scoring systems with the findings on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of AA in pregnant patients. ⋯ Whilst clinical scoring systems may be useful in identifying which pregnant patients require MRI to be performed when AA is suspected, the low sensitivity implies further research is needed to refine the use of this valuable resource.

ReviewDefinitions and adverse outcomes of sarcopenia in older patients in orthopedic and trauma care: A scoping review on current evidence.
Sarcopenia, defined as the loss of muscle mass and strength, can hinder postoperative recovery and raise mortality rates. However, the current evidence on the harmful effects of sarcopenia in older patients in orthopedic and trauma care is unclear. This scoping review investigates different definitions that were used for the diagnosis of sarcopenia in older patients in orthopedic and trauma care and what adverse consequences have been examined. ⋯ Sarcopenia has been increasingly studied in older patients in orthopedic and trauma care but there is a lack of consistent definition criteria. This scoping review suggests that sarcopenia may be associated with prolonged length of stay, higher rates of non-home discharge, and increased mortality among older patients in orthopedic and trauma care. However, prospective studies are necessary to establish the relationship between sarcopenia and refractures, falls, and functional outcome/quality of life among older patients in orthopedic and trauma care.

Management of inflammatory bowel disease in the emergency setting: the MIBODI international survey and evidence-based practices.
This study aimed to evaluate the impact of the WSES-AAST guidelines in clinical practice and to investigate the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of emergency surgeons in managing the complications of ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD). ⋯ Inflammatory bowel disease is a complex disease that requires a multidisciplinary approach with close collaboration between gastroenterologists and surgeons. Emergency surgeons play a crucial role in managing complications related to IBD. One year after publication, the MIBODI study showed significant global implementation of the WSES-AAST guidelines in clinical practice, offering an imperative tool in the improved management of IBD in emergency and urgent settings.

Age affects vascular morphology and predictiveness of anatomical landmarks for aortic zones in trauma patients: implications for resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta.
Understanding the vascular morphology is fundamental for resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of aging on length and diameter of aorta and iliac arteries in trauma patients, and to investigate the predictiveness of anatomical landmarks for aortic zones. ⋯ Aging increases the length and diameter of aorta and iliac arteries, with a tortuous and enlarged morphology in geriatric populations. The mid-sternum and the lower one-third junction of the xiphisternum to the umbilicus were predictive landmarks for zone 1 and zone 3, respectively.
