The present study aimed to evaluate the association between normalized lactate load, an index that incorporates the magnitude of change and the time interval of such evolution of lactate, and 28-day mortality in sepsis and non-sepsis patients. We also compared the accuracy of normalized lactate load in predicting mortality between these two populations. ⋯ Normalized lactate load has the strongest predictive power compared with maximum or mean lactate in both sepsis and non-sepsis patients. The accuracy of normalized lactate load in predicting mortality is better in sepsis patients than in non-sepsis patients.

Clinical Trial
Performance of the new SmartCardia wireless, wearable oximeter: a comparison with arterial SaO2 in healthy volunteers.
Our goal was to evaluate the performance of a new wearable arm located pulse oximeter. ⋯ The new wireless SmartCardia SpO2 measurement system demonstrated in-line results, bias, ARMS and precision in healthy volunteers, when compared with the gold standard SaO2 and with two well established systems, Masimo and Nellcor.

Observational Study
Real-time ultrasound-guided stellate ganglion block for migraine: an observational study.
To observe whether ultrasound-guided stellate ganglion block (SGB) can effectively relieve migraine pain and improve the quality of migraine patients' life. ⋯ This study confirmed that ultrasound-guided SGB is an effective method to treat migraines. This technique can reduce pain and disability and then improve the quality of life of patients with migraines.

Cardiorespiratory impact of intrathoracic pressure overshoot during artificial carbon dioxide pneumothorax: a randomized controlled study.
The aim of this study is to evaluate cardiovascular and respiratory effects of intrathoracic pressure overshoot (higher than insufflation pressure) in patients who underwent thoracoscopic esophagectomy procedures with carbon dioxide (CO2) pneumothorax. ⋯ Intrathoracic pressure overshoot can occur during thoracoscopic surgery with artificial CO2 pneumothorax and may lead to cardiovascular adverse effects which highly depends on the duration of the pressure overshoot.

Although the incidence of postoperative delirium (POD) in the elderly after surgery are rising as individuals are living longer, the pathogenesis of POD remains poorly understood. It has been suggested that miRNA-320 may play a role in POD based on animal study and human study. ⋯ MiRNA-320 might play a role in up-regulating the levels of IGF-1mRNA and APP protein, which offered a new target for POD treatment.
