Mechanical ventilation (MV) can provide effective breathing support; however, ventilatior-induced lung injury (VILI) has also been widely recognized in clinical practice, including in the healthy lung. Unfortunately, the morbidity and mortality of VILI remain unacceptably high, and no satisfactory therapeutic effect can be achieved. The current study aimed to examine the effects of iron chelator preconditioning on the mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS) in alveolar macrophages and pathological lung injury in VILI. ⋯ DFO preconditioning contributes to mitigating the histological lung damage while reducing ROS levels in alveolar macrophages and mitochondria, suggesting that iron metabolism in alveolar macrophages may participate in VILI.

Past studies have demonstrated that goal-directed fluid therapy (GDFT) may be more marginal than previously believed. However, beneficial effects of alpha-1 adrenergic agonists combined with appropriate fluid administration is getting more and more attention. This study aimed to systematically review the effects of goal-directed fluid therapy (GDFT) combined with the application of alpha-1 adrenergic agonists on postoperative outcomes following noncardiac surgery. ⋯ This systematic review of available evidence suggested that the use of perioperative GDFT combined with alpha-1 adrenergic agonists might facilitate recovery in patients undergoing noncardiac surgery.

The effect of patient positions on perfusion index.
The optimal position for surgery is one in which the patient is provided the best possible surgical intervention and put at minimum risk. Different surgical positions may cause changes in tissue perfusion. This study investigates the relationship between surgical patient positions and perfusion index. ⋯ Different body positions can cause changes in tissue perfusion. This should be considered in patient follow-up along with the perfusion index.

Early postoperative recovery in operating room after desflurane anesthesia combined with Bispectral index (BIS) monitoring and warming in lengthy abdominal surgery: a randomized controlled study.
This study aimed to determine whether the use of desflurane (DES) anesthesia combined with bispectral index (BIS) monitoring and warming is effective in reducing anesthesia-controlled operating room time (ACT) in patients undergoing lengthy abdominal surgery. ⋯ Desflurane anesthesia combined with BIS monitoring and warming is associated with early postoperative recovery in lengthy abdominal surgery.
