Differences exist between sexes in pain and pain-related outcomes, such as development of chronic pain. Previous studies suggested a higher risk for pain chronification in female patients. Furthermore, pain catastrophizing is an important risk factor for chronification of pain. However, it is unclear whether sex differences in catastrophic thinking could explain the sex differences in pain chronification. ⋯ This study reported differences between sexes in catastrophic cognitions in the development of chronic pain. This is possibly of clinical importance to identify high-risk patients and ensure an early intervention to prevent the transition from acute to chronic pain.

Sedation versus general anesthesia on all-cause mortality in patients undergoing percutaneous procedures: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
The comparison between sedation and general anesthesia (GA) in terms of all-cause mortality remains a subject of ongoing debate. The primary objective of our study was to investigate the impact of GA and sedation on all-cause mortality in order to provide clarity on this controversial topic. ⋯ The results suggested a potential superiority of sedation over GA, particularly in the context of cardiac and macrovascular surgery, mitigating the risk of in-hospital and 30-day death. However, for the longer postoperative periods, this difference remains uncertain.

Incidence of intraoperative hypotension and its factors among adult traumatic head injury patients in comprehensive specialized hospitals, Northwest Ethiopia: a multicenter observational study.
Traumatic head injury (THI) poses a significant global public health burden, often contributing to mortality and disability. Intraoperative hypotension (IH) during emergency neurosurgery for THI can adversely affect perioperative outcomes, and understanding associated risk factors is essential for prevention. ⋯ The incidence of intra-operative hypotension was 46.41% with 95%CI (39.2,53.6). The factors were duration of anesthesia ≥ 135 min with AOR: 4.25, 95% CI (1.004,17.98), severe GCS score with AOR: 7.23, 95% CI (1.098,47.67), intracranial hematoma size ≥ 15 mm with AOR: 7.69, 95% CI (1.18,50.05), and no pupillary abnormality with AOR: 0.061, 95% CI (0.005,0.732). CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION: The incidence of intraoperative hypotension was considerably high. The duration of anesthesia, GCS score, hematoma size, and pupillary abnormalities were associated. The high incidence of IH underscores the need for careful preoperative neurological assessment, utilizing CT findings, vigilance for IH in patients at risk, and proactive management of IH during surgery. Further research should investigate specific mitigation strategies.

The effect of glycopyrrolate vs. atropine in combination with neostigmine on cardiovascular system for reversal of residual neuromuscular blockade in the elderly: a randomized controlled trial.
Glycopyrrolate-neostigmine (G/N) for reversing neuromuscular blockade (NMB) causes fewer changes in heart rate (HR) than atropine-neostigmine (A/N). This advantage may be especially beneficial for elderly patients. Therefore, this study aimed to compare the cardiovascular effects of G/N and A/N for the reversal of NMB in elderly patients. ⋯ In comparison to A/N, G/N for reversing residual NMB in the elderly has a more stable HR, MAP, and ST-II within 15 min after administration.

Impact of intraoperative hypothermia on the recovery period of anesthesia in elderly patients undergoing abdominal surgery.
This study aimed to investigate the impact of intraoperative hypothermia on the recovery period of anesthesia in elderly patients undergoing abdominal surgery. ⋯ The incidence of intraoperative mild hypothermia after active warming was high in elderly patients who underwent abdominal surgery. Mild hypothermia increased the incidence of shivering and prolonged anesthesia recovery time in elderly patients undergoing abdominal surgery.
