Patients with COVID-19 undergoing pressure support ventilation (PSV) with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) commonly had high respiratory drive, which could cause self-inflicted lung injury. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of different levels of partial pressure of carbon dioxide(PaCO2) on respiratory effort in COVID-19 patients undergoing PSV with ECMO. ⋯ In patients with COVID-19 undergoing PSV with ECMO, an increase of PaCO2 could increase the inspiratory effort.

The influence of anesthesia techniques on cancer recurrence and metastasis following oncological surgery is a topic of growing interest. This meta-analysis investigates the potential effects of regional anesthesia (RA), either independently or combined with general anesthesia (GA), on these outcomes. ⋯ This meta-analysis provides evidence that RA, used alone or adjunctively with GA, is associated with a lower risk of cancer recurrence, particularly in patients with prostate cancer. However, no significant effects were observed on local recurrence or distant metastasis. Further prospective studies should be conducted to clarify this important issue.

Postpartum depression (PPD) is a common mental disease in postpartum women, which has received more and more attention in society. Ketamine has been confirmed for its rapid antidepressant effect in women with PPD. We speculate that esketamine, an enantiomer of ketamine, pretreatment during cesarean can also reduce the incidence of PPD. ⋯ Intraoperative injection of esketamine (0.2 mg/kg) prevented the occurrence of depression (EPDS score > 9) at 4 days after delivery but not 42 days. Esketamine reduced the NRS scores at 6 h, 12 h and 24 h after surgery, but the occurrence of maternal side effects such as dizziness, blurred vision, drowsiness and hallucination were increased.

Effect of protocol-based family visitation on physiological indicators in ICU patients: a randomized controlled trial.
Intensive care unit (ICU) patients often experience significant physiological stress. This study evaluated the effect of a defined family visitation protocol on physiological responses in the ICU. ⋯ Protocol-based scheduled family visits in the ICU may reduce physiological stress, as evidenced by a decrease in patients' heart rate. Implementing tailored visitation protocols sensitive to patient preferences and clinical contexts is advisable, suggesting the integration of family visits into standard care practices for enhanced patient outcomes.
